Help Me Make This Movie…Redux!

This is your cub film producer with a short post to pass the hat around for the film Ian and Dominic Higgins are making. It’s the story of war, destruction, human dignity, and hope. If you missed my earlier posts about this, check out the new All That Remains tag in the tag cloud. [Read more...]

Your Favorite Film Producer Is $5.00 Short…

Whoa…we’ve got real, live, actors!

What’s that? You forgot that I was your favorite film producer? Say it ain’t so, dear reader. Surely you remember how it has been a lifelong ambition of mine to sit in a chair like this one, and act all “big shot” important on the back lot of a film studio. [Read more...]

Regarding the HHS Mandate, Rachel Zoll reports from Baltimore,

A top American bishop said Tuesday the Roman Catholic church will not comply with the Obama administration requirement that most employers provide health insurance covering birth control.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said church leaders are open to working toward a resolution with federal officials, but will meanwhile press ahead with challenges to the mandate in legislatures and in court.

“The only thing we’re certainly not prepared to do is give in. We’re not violating our consciences,” Dolan told reporters at a national bishops’ meeting. “I would say no door is closed except for the door to capitulation.” [Read more...]

For All the Saints: The Martyrs of Douai College

A few days back, we learned about the Bond family and their recusant Catholic past. Also a few days ago, CARA released survey results saying Catholics really want to learn more about the saints, and such. So let’s put it to the test with this post, shall we? Because this post has got it all, from daring do, to fidelity to the faith. Sainthood and martyrdom.

It’s dangerous business being a Catholic.  Dangerous, that is, if your idea of being thought well of is to be looked upon with favor by such worldly paragons as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the San Francisco Chronicle. For His Majesty’s Secret Service: Agent Henry Morse, SJ

About a week ago, I reported that the world thought the Vatican got all starry-eyed about the latest James Bond film. Did you know that the Bond family were a line of recusant CatholicsOrbis non sufficit.

Perhaps that is part of the reason why L’Osservatore Romano loved the film.

Idea! How about a look at a nonfictional story of recusant Catholics? [Read more...]

Wisdom from Thomas Merton’s Letter to a Young Activist

Now that the presidential election is over, some of you may be feeling listless after the loss in the “biggest election of all time.” My advice? Don’t be.

Depending on where you stand politically, think about how you reacted to last nights election news.

Did you get caught up in the election cycle so much that you lost sight of the Kingdom of Heaven? A slippery slope lies between being a concerned citizen and morphing into a partisan political hack who sees everything through the lens of party and not through the lens of faith. [Read more...]

The Tax Man Cometh? You Betcha!

All I’m sure of so far is that the Healthcare Flexible Spending Account level that you could set aside tax-free was slashed from $5,000 to only $2,500, effective January 2013. That’s one way taxes can be raised for everyone without income taxes rates being changed.

For the rest of the muddle, for it will be a battleground, the folks over at H&R Block have a helpful little graphic. Take a gander at it over a beer or your other favorite beverage. [Read more...]
