For Thoughts and a Prayer for Advent by Thomas à Kempis

Thomas à Kempis is one of the people whose writings helped bring me into the Church. Now that Advent is upon us, I’d like to share with you his thoughts on the Advent season.

This is from his A Meditation on the Incarnation of Christ. It’s brief and to the point and a surefire way to recollect your thoughts for the next few weeks. [Read more...]

An Advent Mix (Music for Mondays)

It’s the first week of Advent, and though by no means is this the definitive Advent Music mix, I hope you will enjoy it. We have a couple of versions of a timeless classic, Matthew Maher, an unknown group, an ensemble, Joan Osbourne, and Rare Earth, believe it or not.

To start it off, here’s a New Wave lamentation from Naked Eyes[Read more...]

Because God Became Human To Save Us All

The title of this post says it all. Why bother becoming a Christian unless you believe this? “God became human to save us all.” And if you do believe it, why not practice the ancient faith of the earliest Christians? The one that, despite criticisms attempting to prove the opposite, has developed since Christ ascended to heaven, and yet has not done so at the expense of Biblical truth.

This post is not an attempt to explain all of that. That is what this blog, and a lifetime of study, prayer, and reflection, is for. Today though, just for a few minutes, pause from all the crises and craziness of your daily life to ponder the fact that God became a human being. [Read more...]

O Flower of Jesse’s stem, you have been raised up as a sign for all peoples; kings stand silent in your presence; the nations bow down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid.” [Read more...]

An Advent Prayer

By Fr. Henri J. M. Nouwen

Lord Jesus,
Master of both the light and the darkness,
send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.
We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.
We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.
We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.
We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.
We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.
To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!”

Amen.

God is a Crazy Farmer, And I Am His Plowman

My fields are vast, and yet small. My plot is so tiny, in fact, that you would think that it would be quite mangeable. But there, you would be wrong.

The climate and conditions my plot is set down in is ever changing. And if I take my eye off of it, or let my mind wander, it gets overrun with weeds. Or worse yet? It becomes dry, parched, and rock hard. [Read more...]
