The YIMCatholic Presidential Straw Poll UPDATED

Because you’ve been dying to vote, and you don’t want to wait until November. Why only two choices? Captain Aubrey explains… [Read more...]

What Would President Obama’s Second Term Look Like?

Dinesh D’Souza has an idea. And he has a film coming out soon wherein he hopes to explain the current Presidents’ vision for the future of America.

I’ve always admired D’Souza since bumping into his work while I was trying to get into UCLA.  I had heard of him, and his book Illiberal Educationwhile I was channel surfing and landed on his appearance on C-SPAN’s book review program way back in 1991.  I lost track of him after I graduated, as I had more important things to attend to (like start a new career and a family, etc.). A Business Contract With America? It’s Not Enough UPDATED

Timothy Dalyrymple is a published author, and a Ph.D. While I was learning to field strip an M-16, he was learning about Kierkegaard. He’s also got more degrees than you can shake a stick at. He’s generally a good guy, means well, wants the best for our country, and on top of it all, he lets a lightweight like me stand up on my wee little soapbox and hold forth on why I am Catholic.

Timothy, managing editor of the Patheos Evangelical portal, has been hanging around lately with the likes of Hugh Hewitt, “a nationally syndicated radio host with Salem; he’s also a brilliant law professor and practicing attorney, an accomplished author, and a true leader in the conservative movement.” When I lived in Southern California, I used to watch Hewitt  on KPBS from time to time.

Anyhoo, Tim and Hugh are very concerned about the Romney campaign having being caught flat-footed by the Supreme Court Decision on healthcare reform. And they sure were, weren’t they? Blindsided is more like it. Over on his blog, Hewitt writes that, [Read more...]

Can Mary Ann Glendon Change the President’s Mind on the HHS Mandate?

Last Tuesday, I shared Mary Ann Glendon’s piece in the Wall Street Journal explaining why we are suing the U.S. Government. Today, Kathy Schiffer learns that Glendon has been appointed to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). She wonders if Glendon might be able to help the Administration realize how ridiculous they look trying to protect religious liberty overseas while they trample on it at home. [Read more...]

With the HHS Mandate, Belloc’s Heresy “The Modern Phase” Has Arrived UPDATED

A couple of years ago, when I was boring folks with YIMCatholic Book Club posts, we tackled Hilaire Belloc’s The Great Heresies. We started it around the time school was out in the Summer of 2010, beginning with the Introduction. We followed along for six weeks as Belloc made his way through all the big heresies you’ve heard of, but didn’t know diddly squat about. First, we learned the plan of the book, and then we dug into the following heresies in succession: Arianism; Islam; Albegensianism; and Protestantism. And what was the last selection? Funny you should ask. [Read more...]

The Dozen Lawsuits Filed Today Garnered all of 15 Seconds on CBS News. We Shall Overcome.

Calvin and Hobbes are at it again, making great points in less than 10 seconds.

Thinking along these lines then, I can’t remember the last time I actually watched the evening news. Too many ads from pharmaceutical companies and not enough real news as I recall. But tonight, what with the news that 40+ Catholic organizations sued the government by simultaneously filing a dozen lawsuits across the country, I decided to take a look, and realized pretty quickly that I’m never going to get back that half hour of my life.

I didn’t bother with CNN, or Fox, but I informally surveyed what used to be the Big Three, ABC, CBS, and NBC. Of those three networks, only CBS mentioned the story at all. Deep into the program, ’round about the 25 minute mark, Scott Pelley spent 10 to 15 seconds on the story, er blurb. ABC and NBC? Nothing at all. Nada, zilch, zippo.

Checking their websites, NBC has nothing on the story at all. [Read more...]

Because Jesus Said Plenty About Marriage, and Other Inconvenient Stuff Too…UPDATED

Hey y’all. Didn’t you know that Jesus didn’t say nothin about homosexuality in the Bible? True story. You ain’t gonna find Our Lord say that particular word nowheres in the Scriptures. It’s like he never heard of that situation. Heck, everbody knows that if Jesus didn’t say it, it don’t exist. Right? Just ask Stephen Colbert.

Of course, Jesus said plenty about marriage, and I’m here to tell y’all, it’s damned inconvenient to the spirit of the age nowadays. [Read more...]

Death to Tribalism: Or Several Anti-NDAA Bills in Congress You Should Support Now

I know, I know, it’s easy to forget that which has gone on before. The Magna Carta, signed by King John way back in 1215 AD? That is sooooo eight centuries ago. That’s what it seemed Congress and the Administration said last winter when they fell all over themselves approving the unconstitutional law which strips us of our our rights of habeas corpus, etc. Language like this in that document helped build a foundation for our own Constitution, [Read more...]
