Cardinal Dolan Speaks. Movement, But Not Enough on the HHS Mandate. UPDATED

When I was reading the HHS Mandate Rule proposal, I noticed a pretty big problem: folks have coverage forced upon them, whether they want it or not. Later, I wrote that  the Church would react to the current proposal negatively if the HHS was mandating pornography be forced upon all.

As it turns out, the inability to opt out of coverage was one of the points Timothy Cardinal Dolan made this afternoon when the USCCB released the letter he signed saying the new proposal falls short of meeting the concerns of the Church. There are a number of other reasons too. The USCCB press release was entitled, [Read more...]

Cardinal Dolan’s Own “State of the State” Letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York

He sent it under the letterhead of the New York State Catholic Conference. The occasion? The Governor just delivered his State of the State address today, as did other governors.

The Cardinal took the opportunity to both praise Governor Cuomo for what he is doing that benefits the common good of society, while chastising him for what he is failing to do to protect its most vulnerable members. It is an even-handed approach that many of us should take when writing a letter to our elected representatives.

Here is the letter in full. [Read more...]

Cardinal Dolan Notes Media Silence on Recent Court Decision

Though regular readers here, on New Advent, and at Stand With the US Bishops Against HHS learned all about the recent decision regarding the HHS Mandate in suits filed by the Archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Dolan notes that no one outside of the Catholic bubble noticed it. I reckon the Sunday news shows are busy discussing Fiscal Cliffs and trouble with Health Exchanges to bother reporting on a rebuff to the Administration.

No news is better than bad news? Perhaps for the Administration and its apologists. His Eminence explains, [Read more...]

Regarding the HHS Mandate, Rachel Zoll reports from Baltimore,

A top American bishop said Tuesday the Roman Catholic church will not comply with the Obama administration requirement that most employers provide health insurance covering birth control.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said church leaders are open to working toward a resolution with federal officials, but will meanwhile press ahead with challenges to the mandate in legislatures and in court.

“The only thing we’re certainly not prepared to do is give in. We’re not violating our consciences,” Dolan told reporters at a national bishops’ meeting. “I would say no door is closed except for the door to capitulation.” [Read more...]

Quote of the Week from Cardinal Dolan

The premier answer to the question “What’s wrong with the world?” “what’s wrong with the church?” is not politics, the economy, secularism, sectarianism, globalization or global warming . . .none of these, as significant as they are. As Chesterton wrote, “The answer to the question ‘What’s wrong with the world?’ is just two words:’I am.’” [Read more...]

Separation of Church and State? The HHS Mandate Shatters That

Which is why it must be rescinded. Yesterday, I talked about how pelvic issues have taken primacy and shared Dr. Helen Alvaré’s talk on the HHS Mandate given back in April. Looking further back to February, someone sent me an e-mail about a free class on the Constitution being offered at Hillsdale College. You can still sign up for that bootstrap class, and throw them some shekels as a donation for good measure. [Read more...]

So Colbert and the Cardinal Went to Fordham…

And all we got was this stinkin’ cartoon.

Actually, it’s a fine cartoon, don’t you think? They should have put it on lots of t-shirts, and coffee mugs, or something.

Oh wait, there is video! [Read more...]

The Attacks in Libya and Egypt: A Muslim Perspective and More UPDATED

Brave words from a brave woman who happens to be my blog neighbor from the Muslim Channel. Here name is Nancy Shehata, and thanks be to God, hear her roar,

Yesterday, U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and three of his staff were killed by RPG fire as they tried to leave their embassy.  The crowd outside the embassy there, and another unruly mob outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, were puffed up into a froth by a video, a stupid, useless, anti-Islamic video that had been posted to youtube by fools.  Fools directed by fools.  Someone, some Muslim, some person or people claiming to follow the same religion as I do, fired a rocket into the car to kill a man who had absolutely nothing to do with the video and who would have himself soundly condemned it, had he had the chance. Cardinal Dolan on CBS This Morning with Charlie Rose

Yesterday I lamented the paucity of media coverage regarding the lawsuits filed by 40+ Catholic groups. It appears that the media outlets had some backing and filling to do. CBS again seems to be leading the way, at least in terms of getting the story out to the public and bringing in folks to get to the roots of it.

Here is Timothy Cardinal Dolan speaking with Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning. Charlie Rose and Erica Hill do a great job asking pertinent questions, while His Eminence is in his element explaining the whys and the wherefores of the lawsuit. He also discusses the controversy surrounding Catholic college commencement speakers and such. Have a look (please pardon any attempt to sell you beer and shampoo),

As I mentioned yesterday, birth control pill packages, etc. will always be floating in the background. Read more over at CBS.

Obviously, Cardinal Dolan can’t be everywhere, and on every network at the same time, but he lands on his feet and is a cheerful witness whenever he does.
