Hobby Lobby/ Conestoga Wood SCOTUS Arguments Recap & Transcript

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli, Jr. arguing in Hobby Lobby case (drawn by Art Lien)

Over at the SCOTUS Blog, Lyle Denniston called it “one hearing, two dramas.”

The Supreme Court, in a one-hour, twenty-eight-minute session Tuesday, staged something like a two-act play on a revolving stage: first the liberals had their chance and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy gave them some help, and then the scene shifted entirely, and the conservatives had their chance — and, again, Kennedy provided them with some support. [Read more...]

Is Bill Gates Tip-toeing His Way Towards Catholicism? Is Westboro Baptist’s Fred Phelps?

This photo was taken by Kjetil Ree.

I don’t know the answer to either question, actually. Only they, and God, know. I mention it only because in a recent interview in Rolling Stone, Gates mentioned that he attends a Catholic Church with his wife Melinda, and that they have raised their children in the Church. As for Westboro Baptist’s founder, I learned that he is on his deathbed AND has been “excommunicated” from the church he started.

Let’s look at what the founder of Microsoft said first. [Read more...]

A Reminder On What The HHS Mandate Is All About

From our colleagues in the fight at Summit Ministries, a brief recap on what’s at stake. While our dysfunctional government takes a time out, take a look.

The HHS Mandate Establishes a State Religion: Secularism

When the regulation was originally introduced as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), known popularly as Obamacare, the goal of the administration and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was to force all employers to provide abortifacient drugs — chemicals that halt the implantation of a fertilized egg (a human life) into the uterine wall. For The Good Of The Culture, More Catholic College Professors Like This, Please.

Gonzaga University

Before I wade in too deep here, just know that I am a product of a state college, not a Catholic one. All the same, there are Catholic professors in state supported schools, and in non-Catholic private colleges as well, whom I believe our culture could benefit from if they spoke up like Dr. David DeWolf did recently. What if the HHS Mandate Was For Unfettered Access to Pornography?

Frank, stop. No way is the HHS Mandate’s proposal anything remotely comparable to the government providing no cost access to pornography. Because the Administration, through the Department of Health and Human Services, would never foist something as degrading to human dignity (as pornography is) on the citizenry as a “good.” Not in our Republic.

Why not, dear reader? [Read more...]

Interesting Stuff I Found While Reading the New HHS Mandate Rules

Evening folks. Sorry I haven’t posted anything until now, but I’ve been reading the 80 pages of proposed rules regarding the HHS Mandate. I didn’t really want to, because it’s not exactly Joe Six-Packs’ idea of a “good time.” But seeings how I’ve seen all kinds of reactions to the new proposals, some positive, and some negative, I figured I’d do what the USCCB recommended and read the whole thing.

The Administration Issues Changes to HHS Mandate for Religious Institutions and Affiliates UPDATED

The press release from the Department of Health and Human Services is out. Revisions to the Mandate at this time apply to non-profit religious institutions and their affiliates.

Briefly, the changes make a provision for employees of these institutions to be offered separate coverage for “preventive services” from health insurance companies utilized by their employers, or via another insurance provider if the organization is self-insured.

Here is the press release from HHS, [Read more...]

As the Organic Food Craze Runs Its Course…

Here’s something that HHS will never warn women about.

The irony of utilizing artificial hormones for birth control is lost on the Sex and the City crowd. They’re too concerned about buying organic veggies at Whole Foods, while putting their brains in neutral when at Walgreens and CVS.

Be weird. Be different. Take “organic” to it’s natural conclusion.
