What I Saw In Bethlehem Yesterday (A Photo Essay)

Bethlehem_Advent_2014

Christmas is coming to the City of David…

I’ll be honest with you and tell you that yesterday was a very emotional day. And when I say that, I mean emotional in a good way. There were tears, surely. But they were tears of awe, wonder, and joy.

Our pilgrimage wound it’s way through security points and ventured into the City of David. What follows is a little photo essay of what we saw there. [Read more...]

Joe Six-Pack’s Succinct Thoughts On ISIS, Archbishop Sheen, The Whirlwind At The Archdiocese of Pravda, And MOAR

The "Caliph" and Pope Francis

Hi. Pray for me.

It’s been a weird month so far in the internet version of Catholiclandia and we’re only up to day 6.

You may have noticed that I haven’t posted a cotton-picking thing since the month began. I assure you, my lack of productivity is not on account of me not appreciating those of you who stop by these parts regularly. [Read more...]

James Foley’s Last Letter: Prayers, Family, and Love

james-foley

Throughout my Marine Corps career, I wrote many letters home to my family. I served long before the advent of social media, so the letter writing kits available at the PX were what I used to write home with. I’d write my mom and dad, let them know how I was doing, etc.

Later, after I got married, the letters were to my wife. And then to my wife and my children. [Read more...]

Praise Report: Michael Schumacher Has Regained Consciousness

Back in January I asked folks to pray for the 7 time Formula One champion’s recovery from a skiing accident. Schumacher was put in an induced coma in order to stabilize him after the accident. When his doctors tried to ween him off the ventilators, Michael did not wake up. That he has come out of the coma now is a huge step forward in his recovery. [Read more...]

To Pray For Our Christian Brethren Who Are Under Attack In Iraq UPDATED

Where I live, it’s another lovely Saturday. The kids slept in, the lawns are being cut, Father’s Day barbecues are being planned. Comparatively speaking, all is well.

That is not the case in Iraq these days. And even if it only seems that all is well where I live, it is a paradise compared to Mosul, Iraq as marauders from ISIS rove the countryside, gunning people down.

Innocent people are being terrorized. Families that happen to also be the minorities in the country. The Christian minorities in particular. [Read more...]

To Follow The Way Of The Cross, From Death Into Life

What a deal!

There’s a reason that folks get angry when they learn that the reality of the Christian life leads straight to the cross. Remember that time the disciples were arguing amongst themselves about who would be the greatest? And then the Sons of Thunder got their mommy to ask Jesus if they could sit on his right hand and on his left?

Good times! That’s what we want, too. [Read more...]

Truly, truly, it wouldn’t be Lent without 40 days of silliness regarding The Incarnation running rampant.

Comes the esteemed history professor from UNC-Chapel Hill wondering for 38 minutes and 37 seconds about the historical Jesus,  since he never called himself God, how did he become one?

The first thing you have to do? Forget all about that pesky Gospel of John. From the very first verse, see, John’s gospel proclaims the same truth that the Apostle Thomas stated when he stuck his fingers in Jesus’s still fresh wounds. [Read more...]
