Contraception, the Billionaire’s Wife, Toking Cathechists, and Teletubbies…

Thomas L. MacDonald, one of my newest Patheos Catholic portal classmates, brings all of the above together in the tragicomic opera that is the the unmoored modern Catholic. I say unmoored, but that word assumes someone was on a ship in the first place. Perhaps “born in captivity” would be a better description. [Read more...]

The Bishops Give Us A History Lesson On Religious Liberty And A Call For Prayer

You would have to have been living under a rock not to know that religious liberty has come under fire here in the United States. Those who believe that the Catholic Church is wrong to get involved in the politics surrounding the HHS Mandate, for instance, have unwittingly bought into the argument that there is a “wall of separation” between Church and State, and that one should be completely separate from the other. Janine Turner Speaks Out Against the HHS Mandate

A few weeks ago, I noted that to many women, the HHS Mandate is demeaning. In that post, I shared a video where Gloria Purvis gave a talk that many of you saw, shared, and promptly helped make go viral. [Read more...]

Catholic Leaders On the Sunday Morning News Shows This Easter Morning

In case you missed it, and I know I did, the network news shows this morning decided that Easter Sunday would be a great time to ask some questions that are facing voters this election year. Though I missed the first run of the following two shows, I caught them via the internet and share them with you here to help keep you up to date. Let the reruns begin.

First up is Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who appeared on the CBS Sunday morning stalwart, Face the Nation. He discuss the First Amendment rights of the faithful, though it’s tough to do in the soundbite size time available to him. He tackles the idea that a “wall of separation,” which has risen to prominence in debates regarding the First Amendment, exists between churches and the state. Take a look, [Read more...]

Because the HHS Mandate Amounts to Arbitrary Discrimination…

and that just isn’t right. The above poster, with thoughts from Cardinal Timothy Dolan, reminds me of something Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said during his last public speech.

New Memo from the Bishops Says HHS Mandate “Radically Flawed”

From the National Catholic Register yesterday, details of a March 29 memorandum addressing the problems with the HHS Mandate.

The U.S. bishops said that the government’s latest recommendations on its federal contraception mandate fail to address religious-freedom concerns. [Read more...]

A Petulant POTUS, or an All-Powerful Genie?

Here’s hoping he’s both. In the “petulant President” department, John Fund, a writer based in New York, and the author of Stealing Elections: How Voter Fraud Threatens Our Democracy, has a pretty good recap piece over at National Review Online from this weeks’ Presidential Follies regarding the Litigator-in-Chiefs’ constitutional law gaffs.

What follows is the part of Funds’ piece that hits home with me, [Read more...]

POTUS is Playing Checkers, While the Courts Are Playing Chess

Oops. That’s awkward. And while the board looks the same, chess is a whole ‘nother game than checkers.

You see, after yesterdays presidential tirade regarding the Supreme Court, today a lower court handed the Litigator-in-Chief, via the Justice Department, a homework assignment regarding Judicial Review, and a query as to whether the Executive Branch understands the concept. A three page essay is due on Thursday. Mark Shea has a little fun with this turn of events[Read more...]

POTUS, SCOTUS, Healthcare law, the HHS Mandate, the Bishops and Catholic Social Teaching. Oh My!

When you have a post with a title with two acronyms, a healthcare law, a bureaucratic mandate, the USCCB, and the Social Doctrine of the Church, you have to be prepared for one thing, and one thing only: not pleasing everyone.

That’s why this is an interesting time to live, see? And it’s Holy Week too? [Read more...]

Cardinal Dolan on How the POTUS Broke Faith And Announced the HHS Mandate Was a “Fait Accompli”

Stop the presses, as this just came in from todays’ Wall Street Journal. A frank interview between James Taranto, and Cardinal Timothy Dolan on the HHS Mandate surprise attack. Perhaps “ambush” is a better description. You be the judge.

By JAMES TARANTO, New York

The president of the U.S. Conference of Bishops is careful to show due respect for the president of the United States. “I was deeply honored that he would call me and discuss these things with me,” says the newly elevated Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York. But when Archbishop Dolan tells me his account of their discussions of the ObamaCare birth-control mandate, Barack Obama sounds imperious and deceitful to me. [Read more...]
