Good Discussions Only Seen On A Comedy Show UPDATED

Jon Stewart gives up 12 minutes of airtime to discussion of Catholic social teachings, with Cathleen Kaveny. Name another network that has done the same lately…*crickets chirping.*

UPDATE: Word on Fire’s Rozann Carter brings up a few points that were forgotten/ omitted by Dr. Kaveny. And Jennifer Hartline on who is really getting played while women “star” in the HHS Mandate imbroglio.

The Politics of the HHS Mandate Made Clear UPDATED

It’s all about getting votes for the incumbent, and staying in power. It’s a calculated risk, mind you, and one that looked like a good bet until the outcry from the Catholic Church, and others like-minded in their understanding of the First Amendment. The Administration thought it was prepared for this contingency, and waiting in the wings was an “accommodation” tailor-made to put to rest the fears of the affected parties.

There is only one problem. [Read more...]

Awaiting an Apology from POTUS = Crickets Chirping, and Other HHS Mandate Tidbits

Though I’m on leave, I sheepishly came back aboard the good ship YIMCatholic again to do some light housekeeping. And I was also looking for the keys to my Mustang. I found them hanging on the hook in my stateroom. Go figure.

So since I’m here for a few minutes, I figure I’d pop off a tiny post on stuff I’ve seen on the HHS Mandate in between my break of deep reading and Lenten reflections. The first item to share is this great cartoon that I saw this morning. Bill Maher, and many others, don’t see the truth is this, [Read more...]

Fr. Leo Gives the POTUS the Finger on the HHS Mandate?

It’s Presidents Day here in the U.S., and I’m on holiday. That means I get to do “honey-do’s” while the rest of the family goes and watches a matinee. But before I light into the list of chores I’ve been given, I wanted to share this gem I uncovered on the HHS Mandate.

I’m a history buff, see? The photograph above is of the crew of the USS Pueblo. Remember the Pueblo Incident? She was boarded by the North Koreans in 1968 in “international waters” and her crew was hauled off and imprisoned for 10 months. During their internment, the crew figured a way to let folks know that they were resisting. Guess what that way was? [Read more...]

Why We Should Follow Our Bishops Now And Lead Them Too

But we also have to lead them by example. Sheep leading the shepherds? Bear with me a minute.

The other day, I wrote a post on why we should fight the HHS Mandate. Today, I return to that theme, and expand upon it while clearly sharing the not so earth shattering information that many Catholics in the pews do not care one iota for what the Bishops say about contraception, much less the HHS Mandate. [Read more...]

The Women That Testified to Congress that Planned Parenthood Missed?

They’re right here, folks. Did you have any friends, relatives, or acquaintances plaster the photograph from Planned Parenthood claiming no women testified to Congress on the HHS Mandate on their Facebook walls? Or how about Planned Parenthood’s President Cecile Richards’ statement chastising Congress for not allowing “a single woman” to testify? I know I did.

But the truth is, a picture isn’t always worth a thousand words. Because the fact that several women did testify to Congressman Issa’s panel was ignored, see, because they are Pro-Life. Lifesite News has the scoop, [Read more...]

There is a Second Petition at the White House, FYI UPDATED

And it’s cooking along at 1,431 signatures at last count (@15:45 EST), which is close to the maximum for this particular airframe. Have you signed it yet? Please do, because the crew would really like to transition to the next level of aircraft as soon as possible. [Read more...]

Hugh Hewitt was at Ground Zero on the HHS Mandate the Other Day

Where? Thomas Aquinas College in California. When? You guessed it: on the feast of Saint Paul of the Shipwreck. Isn’t that a beautiful campus? As Mr. Hewitt notes,

I arranged this date last year after a quick visit to the campus on Memorial Day Weekend 2011.  It is a beautiful place with a unique “Great Books” curriculum, and it is a thoroughly tradition Roman Catholic institution. [Read more...]

Why We Must Fight For Our Right of Religious Freedom UPDATED

Should Catholics fight the HHS Mandate, and the other moves by the Administration that seek to remove Catholics from the public square? Absolutely. Should we do so only because this issue is a matter of principle? Well, not just for any principles, but for first principles. For God-given principles, and God-given freedoms. [Read more...]

Thoughts from the “Tao Teh Ching” translated by the “Chinese Chesterton”

My Chinese Catholic friend, John C.H. Wu wrote several works that I have enjoyed reading over the past several years. I’ve shared posts with you from several of his books, namely Beyond East and West, The Science of Love, and Interior Carmel, the Threefold Way of Love. It is not for nothing that Frank Sheed called John “the Chinese Chesterton.” [Read more...]
