An Argument Against the HHS Mandate: Keep America Weird

It may seem a strange way for an argument to develop, but really it is the American Way to allow for nonconformists to thrive.  This is one of our country’s hallmark traits, and a fruit of the wisdom of the founders of our republic.

For example, how many Chick-Fil-A’s were burned to the ground during the latest dustup in the American Culture wars? How many protesters were killed? I’m thinking none. And remember the Occupy Wall Street brouhaha? How many cars were set ablaze? How many store front windows were shattered? How many embassies did we raze? [Read more...]

J. Christopher Stevens, Requiescat in Pace

Prayers for the repose of the soul of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, and for the souls of the others killed in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

God of the spirits and of all flesh,
who have trampled death and annihilated the devil
and given life to your world, may you yourself,

O Lord, grant to the soul of your deceased servants
J. Christopher Stevens and companions, rest in a place of light, a verdant place,
a place of freshness, from where suffering,
pain and cries are far removed.

Do You, O good and compassionate God
forgive every fault committed by them in word,
work or thought because there is no man
who lives and does not sin.
You alone are without sin and your justice
is justice throughout the ages and your word is truth.

Since you, O Christ our God, are the resurrection,
the life and the repose of your deceased servants, Christopher Stevens and companions,
we give you glory together with your un-begotten Father
and your most holy, good and life-creating Spirit,
now and always and forever and ever.

Amen.

Coming Soon to iTunes: Pope Benedict XVI

And it’s all through a partnership between the Vatican’s publishing house and Apple Inc.

The Vatican has teamed up with Apple to develop new hi-tech methods for communicating the works of Pope Benedict XVI to the world.

“It represents an enormous step on the international stage because, as you know, internet goes beyond space and time,” said Father Giuseppe Costa, the director of the Vatican’s publishing house Libreria Editrice Vaticana. [Read more...]

About Catholic Relief Services, Brandon Vogt reminds us…

that while “the good” isn’t “the perfect”  (in the midst of a fallen world), that doesn’t mean it’s the embodiment of all evil either. Nor does that make it the aider and abettor of evil anymore than the Church is as a whole.

What follows is from his post entitled Compassion vs. CARE: A Defense of Catholic Relief Services.

Quote of the Week: Christopher Nolan

From The Dark Knight Rises website,

Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on the screen is an important  and joyful pastime. The movie theater is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families. —Christopher Nolan

And our prayers are with them too.

Photographs of the Week: Christian Bale Visits the Victims UPDATED

This is for the half-dozen or so readers who haven’t seen the photographs of actor Christian Bale (Batman) visiting the hospital where victims of the theater shooting last Friday are being treated.

Christian Bale meets with Aurora theater shooting victim Carey Rottman. Warner Brothers says its on his own time and not on the company’s behalf. This guy is a class act. -Kaiser of Radio 104.1 WMRQ

Mitt Romney says, “We Are All Catholics Now” UPDATED

Why am I choosing the “lesser of two evils” come this Fall? Let me show you Exhibit A.

The folks over at The Weekly Standard have the rest of the story from a town hall style campaign stop in Ohio a few days ago. They’ve just never heard of TubeChop over at TWS.

Maybe Mitt Romney isn’t an “evil” to choose, but just a weevil. Still, I’ll be choosing him. It’s like this, see?

I’m not going to “overthink” the vote. There are just too many other more important things to do.

Archbishop Lori’s Op-Ed in the Washington Post

It hit the web edition’s Guest Voices column early this afternoon.

With tweets and text messages, prayers and preaching, Catholics and other Americans will spend the next two weeks (June 21-July 4) launching a religious freedom awareness campaign called the “Fortnight for Freedom.

Concern for religious freedom both here and abroad has been growing for years, and now there are calls for immediate action. Stories of people literally dying for the faith in Iraq and Nigeria can be found in daily newspapers. There, churches are bombed and the blood of martyrs runs freely. [Read more...]
