Because Jesus Said Plenty About Marriage, and Other Inconvenient Stuff Too…UPDATED

"Jesus Christ and the rich young man," Heinrich Hoffman.

“Marriage? Funny you should ask about that, young man…”*

Hey y’all. Didn’t you know that Jesus didn’t say nothin about homosexuality in the Bible? True story. You ain’t gonna find Our Lord say that particular word nowheres in the Scriptures. It’s like he never heard of that situation. Heck, everbody knows that if Jesus didn’t say it, it don’t exist. Right?

Of course, Jesus said plenty about marriage, and I’m here to tell y’all, it’s damned inconvenient to the spirit of the age nowadays. [Read more…]

Archbishop Kurtz: “Marriage is and always will be the union between one man and one woman.”

Today was the day oral arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges came before the Supreme Court of the United States. The opening statement by Mary Bonauto made it 39 seconds before the questioning by the justices began. [Read more…]

The 6th Circuit Court’s Wise Decision On Same-Sex Marriage

Just the other day I was joking on Facebook that I welcome our new judicial overlords. I said it jokingly because it seems like many courts have made decisions based on half-baked ideas lately.

But today, the 6th Circuit of Appeals bucked the trend of governing from the bench.  USA Today reports, [Read more…]

N.T. Wright On Reality, Gay Marriage, And Being On The Wrong Side Of History

Over at First Things, Matthew Schmitz shared a video, and transcribed a rough draft of an interview that noted theologian, and retired Anglican bishop, N.T. Wright gave with J. John , of the Philo Trust, back in February. John asks questions to his guests, see, from his notes, and from his friends, and from the studio audience, on a program he hosts that is awesomely titled, Facing the Canon.

BOOM! I like that title. [Read more…]

Cardinal Kasper’s Thoughts On Our Divorced And Civilly Remarried Brethren

Some folks are likely to play the “Good Cleric/Bad Cleric” game with Cardinal Kasper’s  comments about our divorced and civilly remarried brethren, but I won’t be. I’m just an regular guy, see, with no claims to knowing all the ins and outs of the theology of marriage.

I do know that Pope Francis has mentioned Cardinal Kasper’s book , Mercy: The Essence of the Gospel and the Key to Christian Life, favorably, going as far as to say, “This book has done me such good.”

Below is a snippet of Cardinal Kasper’s comments on this important matter given in an interview published in Commonweal this morning. Read them with an open mind, and an open heart. [Read more…]

Video: The Economics Of Sex, Sex, Sex, And More Sex

Got ten minutes? That’s all it will take for the Austin Institute for the Study of Family and Culture to help us make sense of dating, mating, and baby making. Even the folks at Freakonomics found this worthwhile to share.

Special guest appearance by the motivation changing, and soon to be ubiquitous (and free!), birth control pill.

Grab some popcorn, settle down with a favorite beverage,  and learn a little about the birds and the bees, and the costs associated with the same. Who wins and who loses. It’s all quite fascinating.

Ready? Roll tape.  [Read more…]

“Since The Divorce Rate Is So High, Let’s Opt For 10 Year Long (Term Renewable) Marriages Instead!”

Seriously? I LOL’d. Nice try, Adriana Cohen, but you obviously have never been involved in a) contract negotiations, or b)received every businesses idea of a good time: the Request For Proposal. You know, as your current contract rounds the corner for “renewal,” and your services are put out for bid.

Enduring water boarding is a bit more civilized than enduring that. [Read more…]

Your Marriage Quote of the Year

This works both ways, I hope.

When a guy is happily married, no matter what happens at work, no matter what happens the rest of the day, there’s a shelter when you get home. There’s a knowledge, knowing that you can hug somebody without them throwing you down the stairs and saying get your hands off me. Being married is like having a color television set; you never want to go back to black and white.

–Danny Perasa

Get over to Chelsea Zimmerman’s blog and see the video the Rauch brothers made for Story Corps. It’s built around the recorded interviews between Danny Perasa and his wife Annie. Bonus! Read a few thoughts on marriage by Pope Francis there as well.

You’ll be glad you did.
