Because Tolkien and Lewis Took A Walk After Dinner

I had someone leave a comment on a post who lamented questioningly,

“After all, do Christians proselytize to others as they wish others would proselytize to them? The very notion is ridiculous.”

Below is a great video clip, courtesy of Kevin O’Brien’s Theater of the Word, Incorporated, that puts that statement to the test. Because we are called to spread the Good News in ways that appeal to all people. [Read more...]

Heh. And you thought the Mayan Calendar was something to fear.

St. Martin of Tours, pray for us.

Remember When Wayne & Garth Got Back Stage Passes & Met Alice Cooper?

That’s sort of how I felt after I was Confirmed. The “backstage pass effect”, see, ushered me into the inner sanctum. Once inside, I started getting schooled in surprising ways, much like how Alice Cooper’s knowledge of Milwaukee, and the Algonquin native culture blows away Wayne & Garth. Whoa. And then, after the 15 seconds of an audience I was expecting, I was invited to hang out too? What a feeling! When that happened, that is where all of my preconceived notions about the Church fell away, and left me hitting the floor sort of like the boys here. [Read more...]

Che Guevara Occupies Wall Street!

Che what?! Whew! That’s just Stephen Colbert, doing that thing he does so well. I was worried there for a second. [Read more...]

Eight Great Songs for Halloween

Hey, it’s not every year that Music for Mondays falls exactly on Halloween. Last year, see, Monday was All Saints Day, and I went totally religious on you. But as this only happens once every seven years, I have to make the most of it. So in honor of the High Holy Day of Halloween, I’ve put together a little collection of eight of my favorite songs to enjoy the Eve of the Feast of All Saints. I’ll run these roughly through a sort of chronological rock n’ roll order, starting with the the oldest song from 1962. [Read more...]

For Shakespeare’s St. Crispin’s Day Speech

Rally the men, King Harry!

It’s St. Crispin’s Day! Which means it’s time for my favorite speech penned by William Shakespeare. See, the Battle of Agincourt occurred on the Feast of Sts. Crispin and Crispinian, which back before I was Catholic I would only have known this day as October 25th. But I knew about the Battle of Agincourt because it is renowned as an almost miraculous victory of a small English army, a long way from home, over a vastly superior French one (on it’s home turf) on this day in the Year of Our Lord, 1415. Air America, Downey Jr., Gibson & Friends (Music for Mondays)

SR-71 Blackbird, “Velocitus Incalculus”

Welcome to the first MfM post since moving here to Patheos. See that hurtling piece of machinery above? That’s what the good ship YIMCatholic looked like this week. She’s a Transformer, see? Usually a wind powered, bluff bowed vessel good for 12-15 knots, but sometimes, she goes ballistic like the bird you see above. We’ll get to the reason why later, but first let’s put that picture to some music, [Read more...]

Yes, I Know Jack.

Well, I don’t actually know him, but I met him today. Who am I talking about? Father Jack Collins, CSP of course. Old hands around here know that during my lunch hour, I usually go to Mass at the parish located downtown about a 10 minute walk from my office. [Read more...]

Robert Downey, Jr. Asks Hollywood to Forgive Mel Gibson UPDATED

This past Friday, in the spirit of Christ’s forgiveness of the adulteress when she was presented to him by the holier than thou, a remarkably similar story has come to my attention from an area that I usually steer clear of: the shoals of Hollywood. And yet this is where a stunningly familiar event took place. [Read more...]

Fr. Robert Barron Interview on Salt + Light TV

From our beleaguered friends to the North comes this, one of the best uses of 27:07 of my time in a while. I think you’ll agree.

Unfortunately I’m too lubberly to know who to embed the video here on WordPress so instead, the link to this excellent use of your time is below. [Read more...]
