You would think that these two things are completely unrelated. On top of that, you may also be wondering what does this have to do with being Catholic. Aside from enjoying using our brains you mean? [Read more...]

It’s basically the scorched earth policy of tolerance, as the Santa Monica City Council banned all holiday decorations in a decision made back in June. Jenna Chandler of the Santa Monica Patch brings us up to speed on the courts’ decision today. [Read more...]

Public Prayer at University of Tennessee, Revisited

The other day I shared the story about the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s letter to the University of Tennessee regarding prayer before events. The University has stated that they will continue to allow “non-sectarian” prayer before sporting events, etc., and the FFRF has said they will not pursue further legal action, but that they will continue to monitor the situation.

As the clip below reports, the FFRF is on the march throughout the state of Tennessee, doing what they can to free the masses from what they consider to be an exclusive practice, and one that violates the separation of church and state. Roll tape, [Read more...]

University of Tennessee to Freedom From Religion Foundation: Continue to Pray, We Shall UPDATED

My local news outlet has the skinny, hot off the wire.

The University of Tennessee is standing by its stance that its time honored ritual of praying before each football home game does not violates the constitution.

Last week, a national organization called the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to the university, asking leaders to stop the prayers.   The foundation argued that public prayer before a game doesn’t belong at a public institution, and it violates the constitution. [Read more...]

The “Friendly Atheist” On Muddled Pro-Life Arguments By Conservatives UPDATED

Hemant Mehta has a post up entitled Why Are Religious Conservatives So Bad When It Comes to Discussing Abortion? He notes that,

When it comes to the 100% pro-life position regarding rape/incest exceptions, here’s an argument against allowing them that I can understand: [Read more...]

Marc Barnes is like Ted Williams Hitting .400

And just as fun to watch. Take for instance this post he wrote yesterday, which has gone as viral as the Spanish Influenza, being seen by close to 37,000 people in a little more than 24 hours. Like Ted drinking a bottle of Moxie, Marc wades right in.

Oh dear. Matthew Inman of the marvelous web-comic, The Oatmeal, seems to have experienced that exquisite twitch all modern atheists are doomed to experience — the I-know-what’s-best-for-you-silly-religious-people-come-heed-me spasm. This particular train of thought requires the thinker ignore the vast majority of Christian belief — which is entrenched in reason — and focus solely on minority caricatures of the creationist or the wailing-out evangelical, caricatures firmly established and grounded in The Holy Internet Worldview. Having thus defined the term “religion”, the moral high ground is taken, the sneers are unleashed, and all religious people fear and tremble, for atheism has demonstrated itself as supremely reasonable, authoritative, scientific, and gosh-darnit it’s a wonder everyone just doesn’t convert on the spot. Check it out. [Read more...]

Monsignor Charles Pope Defends the Faith…UPDATED

from the “know it all” Know Nothings. In this case, the know it all is Patheos’ own Friendly Atheist.

I once wrote that treating atheists like they are stupid is a mistake. I still believe that. Of course, it’s also a huge mistake to let them pretend they have figured everything out, deciding to junk thousands of years of tradition, revelation, interpretation, and enlightened study of Christianity. The Flying Spaghetti Monsters & Sky Fairies ya-da, ya-da offense is getting played out. [Read more...]
