Does God Hate Flags? An Answer On The 69th Anniversary Of The Flag Raising On Iwo Jima

69 years ago today…

I saw a blog post with this title recently: God Hates Flags: The Public Nature of Theology. It’s a pretty good piece written by Artur Rosman regarding the events going down in Ukraine.

I respect Rosman’s viewpoints regarding events in Eastern Europe, as he is from Poland. But I’ve been reading the Bible a little, and from this passage in Numbers it appears that no, God does not hate flags. [Read more...]

Gay Man Refused Last Rites? “GetReligion” Has Some Thoughts On This Story

You’ve probably seen the story published by The Washington Post about the gay man who was allegedly denied a Sacrament by a priest because he was gay.

When I read the story, something didn’t smell right to me. The first thing that popped into my head though was a question. Is this news? Or is it propaganda disguised as news? I think it is the latter.

GetReligion has a fine stable of writers who, unlike many journalists, actually do “get” religion. Terry Mattingly does a great job sifting through this lopsided attempt to snare readers with an outrage inducing headline and lede.

Take a look, [Read more...]

“Since The Divorce Rate Is So High, Let’s Opt For 10 Year Long (Term Renewable) Marriages Instead!”

Seriously? I LOL’d. Nice try, Adriana Cohen, but you obviously have never been involved in a) contract negotiations, or b)received every businesses idea of a good time: the Request For Proposal. You know, as your current contract rounds the corner for “renewal,” and your services are put out for bid.

Enduring water boarding is a bit more civilized than enduring that. [Read more...]

A Few Words For Wednesday (Music Edition)

It’s kind of like this, see.

Ah, words. Can’t live with ‘em; can’t live without ‘em. Right now, I can’t live with ‘em.
There are better bloggers whom you can read today, though. Head on over to the Catholic Channel homepage for a bushel of their good stuff.

Or, put your headphones on and you can listen to a few of my favorite tunes instead.

BREAKING: SCOTUS Suspends Same-Sex Marriages In Utah

The Associated Press shared the news a few minutes ago.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has put same-sex marriages on hold in Utah, at least while a federal appeals court more fully considers the issue. [Read more...]

Because the Mandated HHS Rules Strike at the Heart of Freedom

Originally, this post was published in mid-January, 2012. A few days later, the thoughts I read by John Courtney Murray, SJ, inspired me to draft the little petition that, with the help of 29,000+ folks, got the White House’s attention when they determined that the HSS Mandate was, for the Church, a “fait accompli.”

Given Justice Sotomayor’s decision to block the Administration’s HHS Mandate toward’s The Little Sisters of the Poor, I’ve decided to dust this off and republish it. [Read more...]

Because Joseph Was Really, Really, צדיק

צדיק is the Hebrew word for “righteous,” and it is an adjective that the Gospel of Matthew uses  to describe the foster father of Jesus (though he used the Greek word, δίκαιος). But it means righteous on the level of say a Moses or  an Elijah. In other words, not just a good man, but a really, really, high level, holy man, like those paragons of holiness.

Anglicized, the word is rendered as saddiq or tzadik. Do you recall the gospel reading from last Sunday? [Read more...]

A Blogger Responds: We Were Not “Outmarketed” on Gay Marriage, We Were “Outevangelized”

Different show, same topic.

Gerard Nadal doesn’t pull any punches with his response to an interview given by Cardinal Timothy Dolan on Fox News recently. Take a look.

Fox News reports that Cardinal Dolan, in an interview with David Gregory of Meet the Press, claims that the Church was “outmarketed” on the issue of gay marriage. From the report:

Asked why the church is losing the argument on gay marriage, Dolan responded, “Well, I think maybe we’ve been outmarketed sometimes. We’ve been caricatured as being anti-gay.”

He said the church supports “traditional marriage and is not “anti-anybody,” adding, “When you have forces like Hollywood, when you have forces like politicians, when you have forces like some opinion-molders that are behind it, it’s a tough battle.”

Without knowing it, Cardinal Dolan has identified the core of the problem. [Read more...]
