Remembering, With Gratitude, The D-Day Sacrifices Of The Fallen

Pope Francis remembers, and is grateful.

Francis praised “the numerous soldiers who left their country to land on the beaches of Normandy to fight against Nazi barbarism and free occupied France”.

The Vatican said Francis “also does not forget the German soldiers dragged into this drama, like all victims of war”.

Though written long before the invasion of Normandy, G.K. Chesterton’s thoughts from his book, Orthodoxy (1908), captures the paradox faced by the soldier, and why gratitude for their courageous efforts (when exercised justly) is something not to be taken for granted by us, but to be lauded and praised.

For A Few Thoughts On Memorial Day UPDATED

 

Two years back, I wrote a Memorial Day post titled To Remember the Fallen. I shared a personal story with you about a few of my brother Marines and asked you to share your prayers with us for those you wanted to remember as well.

Posts like that are hard to write, and I did not relish a repeat performance come the following year, nor for this year as well. Last year, see, I put it off and decided to watch a movie instead. It wasn’t a war movie, either. But, as the old saying goes, you can run, but you can’t hide. This year, as my family gets ready to honor the fallen at a local veterans cemetery this morning, I looked at what I wrote last year, and I’ve decided to serve it up again. [Read more...]
