Beards & boys – SD late season pheasant hunt

pheasantsnow2

I wrote a post last week about taking my son hunting & fishing. (Btw, it's always interesting to see how hunting & fishing posts draw strong support... AND fire. Bristol Palin - who, as you know, comes from a great, outdoorsy, Alaska family! - shared my post on her FB page, and then fielded several anti-hunting comments. Here's one below.) In the same vein as my last post, I wanted to share a video of Aidan's first pheasant hunt. In the first week of January, we went to South Dakota with … [Read more...]

Ballard quits NFL for good…reasons

I read a great Man on the Run-type of story this week: Minnesota Vikings’ standout, Christian Ballard, just quit the NFL. A 24-year-old man living his childhood dream and making almost $700,000/yr. walked away from professional sports. Why? Other things mattered more. Ballard told USA TODAY Sports: “Making that much money—that was fun. But money is still a material thing. You can always make money. You can’t make that time you lose with your friends and your loved ones. Time is something that yo … [Read more...]

Billboard ONLY Child Abuse Victims Can See

This group makes me want to buy a Harley-Davidson and fill my closet with leather. Big, bad dudes all dressed up and ready to…protect children. Talk about an important & urgent cause! A report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds in our country. Approximately 3 million reports are filed every year in the U.S. These 3 million reports add up to about 6 million victims under the age of 18.These statistics, as shocking as they are, do not tell the entire story. Not even close. M … [Read more...]

Men, Friendship, and Swimming Upstream

men friends

Each man needs a solid brother or two, yet this type of friendship isn’t easy to cultivate today. When the television was invented and placed in every house on the block, men began to spend less time outside. Personal computers allow them to shop, bank, and pay bills online. Facebook, Twitter, and Smartphones have framed their interactions with friends, constraining their encounters to 140 characters or less. Sociologist Robert Putnam wrote a book called, The American Porch: An Informal History … [Read more...]

Enjoy The Holiday Season Without Guilt

Butter on a white background

I will exercise less this month. I will eat more butter. And I will feel less guilt about spending fewer minutes on the treadmill and more time at the table. These are a few of my resolutions for the month of December, and they’re largely inspired by Bernard Lagat.Lagat is an insanely fast runner. He’s a four-time Olympian. He owns seven American records. And he won the Fifth Avenue Mile last year in a time of 3 minutes, 50.5 seconds. 3 minutes, 50.5 seconds…Are you kidding me?!! What’s more, … [Read more...]
