When Eggs Are More Than Just Eggs

first two eggs

If I want to write a Haiku about two chicken eggs, I will. It’s been a discouraging month; few things have worked as they should these past several weeks. I was nearing the end of my rope this afternoon when my 11-year old daughter burst into the house carrying an egg in each hand, rewards of nine months work building chicken houses, hanging roost boxes, providing food & water, and fighting off our two hunting dogs who still think that these chickens were their early Christmas presents. We h … [Read more...]

Eating Meat In Morrissey’s Honor

grilled beef with tomato

I’m grilling hamburgers tonight in honor of Morrissey’s comment. I don’t have a problem with people who choose not to eat meat. I do have a problem, however, with someone who uses the term “serial killers” to describe hunters, and by association, farmers, ranchers and all people associated with the meat-production industry. When Steven Patrick Morrissey backed out of performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night because the men of Duck Dynasty were slotted to be Kimmel's guests, he said: “As far as … [Read more...]

Sorry Bob Costas, I Disagree.

Jovan Belcher

Sorry, Bob. I disagree.First of all, let me say that I'm every bit as sad and discouraged as Bob Costas by the Jovan Belcher situation. However, I'm also sad because we're in a day in which a sportscaster feels he should use his platform to act the part of a cultural expert, giving commentary on one of the deepest moral and social issues of our times. By pinning this tragic shooting on guns, Costas trivialized the Jovan Belcher situation. See video below:Don’t misunderstand me. I … [Read more...]

The Whitetail Rut…They’re Crazy!

THE WHITETAIL RUT Photo courtesy of Charlie Alsheimer

The air almost smells different. It’s the beginning of the rut, a frenzied time of year. They become vulnerable. They run around with their tongues hanging out, making erratic, impulsive decisions that could shorten their lives…or, if they’re lucky, help them score. They become strange, unpredictable creatures – sometimes you see them, sometimes you don’t. They change from moment to moment. They get tunnel vision—life becomes about one thing. They eat and sleep just enough to supply them with ene … [Read more...]

Bowhunting & Debating – Paul Ryan Makes The Connection!

If you like to hunt and fish, you've got to admire a politician who approaches a debate like he approaches a morning in a treestand. Let me just say, if I were a whitetail or a politician...I wouldn't want to wander into Ryan's territory. Henry David Thoreau wrote: “There is a period in the history of the individual, as of the race, when the hunters are the ‘best men,’ as the Algonquins called them. We cannot but pity the boy who has never fired a gun; he is no more humane, while his education h … [Read more...]

Calvin Miller, Making Choices, and Following Through

choices and follow through

I'm feeling sad over the death of Calvin Miller. I not only appreciate his books, but I greatly enjoyed spending a couple of hours with this gracious man. While I was in seminary at Talbot, he was a guest lecturer. He insisted on buying my wife and me lunch and then urged us to spend time with him before he returned home (Beeson Divinity School). He made it feel that we were the honored guests for the following two hours.Knowing about his life and ministry has reminded me that … [Read more...]
