On Quitting Things…& Joining the Patheos Progressive Christian Channel

Processed with VSCOcam with x1 preset

At the end of December, I posted my new year's resolution: To quit the Progressive Christian Internet in 2014. The post generated a good deal of conversation, which was surprising since it felt a little more like a personal rant, a brief window into an internal gut-decision that I was making and thought very few people would understand. I posted it at like 1AM. Thought no one would even read it, honestly. But people did read it, and people reacted strongly. I learned from the exchange and … [Read more...]

Roe-ing, Wade-ing, & Reflecting

2014-01-22-LifeDayAnnaG

Today is the 41st anniversary of the landmark decision immortalized as "Roe v. Wade."This may seem like a silly play on words for the sake of a blog metaphor (and one which has probably been done before), but if Roe v. Wade was a changing of the tide, I wonder how we are all doing - as a nation, as a church, as a human race - in these new seas. How are we getting on? Are we sure of ourselves or just wading out a little further into the ocean of safe and legal abortion to see if it all works? … [Read more...]

Frozen & the Fixer-Upper

I'm a dad to two little girls. Gemma is newly four, and Pippa, newly two. And, as is the trick when one has two children fairly close in age, they have reached a blessed phase in which they enjoy lots of the same things, even if they enjoy them in slightly different ways. This past Christmas was one of those things, with both kiddos fully aware and engaged in the ecstasy of tearing through wrapped toys and watching Santa cartoons and eating cinnamon buns. And the Disney animated movie … [Read more...]

Like Sheep Amidst the Wolves (of Wall Street)

Okay, so if you need some kind of disclaimer about the sex, swearing, and drug use that pervades the DiCaprio/Scorsese masterpiece The Wolf of Wall Street, please consult Focus on the Family's Plugged In Movie Review (if you dare).Suffice it to say, there are not graphic or profane scenes in this film - the film itself is a graphic and profane scene. It is, in this sense, an experience of the excessive, a revelation of the gratuitous. And how could it not be? If we have any illusions about … [Read more...]

Mark Driscoll on Glenn Beck

Last night, Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Seattle was on Glenn Beck's show. Here are the (free) clips from the show, the first one being about "men" and the second about "intolerance." Both reinforce the view I've expressed here that Mark and other prominent "young" conservative evangelical and neo-reformed leaders are coalescing a new religious right in the U.S.Men:Intolerance:While the content is fairly predictable, a couple things stand out that scream "new religious right." In … [Read more...]

Modest Hopes for My Two Girls

It's been about a year since I started blogging more intentionally, and during that time I have learned so much. And I've learned so much from you, the readers (many of whom are brilliant writers) who comment and engage and challenge and inform me as I put my ideas and experiences out there. For some reason, a lot of what we've talked about here (and on Facebook and Twitter) has revolved around gender dynamics in the church, family, and culture. Some of the things I've learned … [Read more...]

Why I am Conservative AND Progressive

A recent conversation on Twitter got me thinking about how I find myself straddling the line between what folks might call "conservative" and "progressive."Now, my definition of "conservative" here is more literal than political. I'm not saying that I am conservative in the sense of identifying as a political - whether social or fiscal - conservative. The entire American conservative political movement is fairly repulsive to me. Listening to the local evangelical (read: baptized American … [Read more...]

Watching an Episode of Celebrity Christianity

They might as well just rename the show, "Celebrity Christianity" instead of Preachers of L.A.Because this is the definition of celebrity values corrupting the very core of the gospel to the degree that it is really no gospel at all.In my previous post on the topic, I argued that despite the spiritual claims and the apparent concern for compassion causes among many participating in this trend, Celebrity Christianity is really a counterfeit. While supposedly seeking to help disadvantaged … [Read more...]
