He talks about Brits as if we resent accomplishment and rail against Thatcherism because it represents success; that's nonsense. We rail against it because it celebrates the very worst aspects of human nature and turns them into virtues. We rail against her because she represents the trickle-down fallacy and Raeganomics in Britain. Because under her, a very few people became super rich, and a very lot became super poor. There have been three major economic crashes in Britain since WW2 (all of which made a few much richer, and a lot much poorer), and they have ALL taken place since Thatcherism became an integral, seemingly immovable part of our politics.

Sullivan isn't by any means the only Britisher that has described late '70s-early '80s GB in those terms. And certainly, the voters that brought her to power and kept her there for three terms were responding to something.

LOL The impression I get is that Thatcher in the UK makes Obama look like a unifying figure in the US by comparison. Demonized by the left, beatified by the right, is there *anyone* in the entire UK who has a middle ground opinion of Thatcher?

Nobody in Britain called her Baroness, either. These days we mostly just refer to her by singing "Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead". Which old witch? The wicked witch.

Okay, I realize this is just because I'm an American, but hearing her referred to as Baroness Thatcher is just weird. To my ears it makes it sound like she was in league with Cobra Commander or something... LOL

Seriously, Roger Ebert, Annette Funicello and Margaret Thatcher? Did anyone bet on that combination?
