I'm not much of a hippie, but I did a pretty good impression in college. I'm willing to bet that I had the longest hair at the college - male or female. Of course, there was a trend for shaved heads, so I didn't have much competition. Still, wish I could scrape up a picture.

I did an interview a while back for the book release with another author. I combed my hair into a nice ponytail, trimmed my beard, and wore a clean t-shirt.

I just wound up looking like a 20 pounds overweight nerd.

Ty - that is like me, except for the beard and tattoos. I've nothing against having one, but I don't think I would have more than one, once I figured out what it would be. I always lived in old jeans and ... to be honest, I'm more like a lazy bachelor. I don't feel at all like a dude, but when it comes down to it, I don't like a lot of the same things women are trained to like, I dress how I'm comfortable, I don't bother to put make-up on most of the time, and that's why my mom thinks I'm a hippie. I do wear a bra and shave my legs and armpits, and I don't smoke weed mostly because I'm not cool enough to find any. If I wasn't so lazy and it was important to me at all, I suppose I would try harder. I don't have any bumper stickers of dancing bears on my car either. I don't have any bumper stickers on my car. I defy labels so you don't know who I am. I'm not going to tell you on my car so you can file me - to me, that's what makes me a hippie, not the markers most people use to recognize one.

I am only a hippie in that I have long hair and a beard, and tend to dress extremely casually. I don't smoke pot or practice pacifism or any of the other standard hippie tropes.

I've joked before that I look like an aging biker, but honestly, if I were more tatted up that's exactly what people would think I was. I just watched a documentary on outlaw motorcycle clubs and was amused at how many of the people interviewed looked pretty much just like me.

Here is my face. Best I could find. There was a party for the study association from my university with a bio-hazard theme.

Now.... if we can just get Daniel to do it....

I had a weird dream about 6 months ago or so, and we were all at a party at Daniel's mansion (yes, Daniel had a mansion) and he was wearing a rubber mask that looked like that cartoon avatar he has and we all kept trying to take it off of him.

Me too. But like I am not really a nerd and only seem a lot like one sometimes to some people, I've never really been that much of a hippie according to the people who sort people into groups.

I have to carry an afro-comb constantly. Seriously, being outside when it's raining and having no comb is horrendous. My hair knots up into tiny curls that if I don't get a comb through it quickly it will hurt later to comb it.

My hair is not usually that neat, but it was full of white dye for the costume :-) At the moment it's shaved short because I'm in operating theatres and it's just easier that way.

At least you don't have to worry about carrying a pocket comb?

Being able to grow facial hair is a double-edged sword. You are then responsible for keeping it under control, and that involves manipulating very sharp objects near major arteries before you are fully awake in the morning. And I'll let you in on a little secret: almost nobody who can grow a beard is 100% satisfied with the way it looks. I'm happy with the way my goatee and mustache come in, but I inherited enough Cherokee genes to make a full beard problematic. Cheek scruff I can do, and that's the best you can say for it.

I've always wanted to grow a beard like yours. It's a pity I inherited beardless genes.
