This is a really hard category. Most of the cameos that stuck in my mind were awesome. Bad cameos are pretty rare; most of them are bad by virtue of being in an already terrible film. Like Al Pacino in Gigli.

I always found the cameo by Christian Slater in Star Trek VI to be really odd. It broke the rhythm of the film.

As my favorite of the original series films, I'm ashamed to say that I didn't actually recognize it was Slater at Sulu's quarters reporting until my then-girlfriend pointed it out on a future VHS viewing (as she was a Slater fan, and not so much a Star Trek fan).

If you're counting the small screen too, then I want to nominate Linda Hunt for her horrendously misguided decision to accept the role of Commander Chennault in the mercifully short-lived 1993 TV series "Space Rangers".

The role was more than a cameo, but only technically.

I was going to start with Ricky Gervais in Stardust, but even I have to concede that the awfulness of his "acting" is offset by the fact that you get to see him get stabbed to death.

So, my nomination goes to: Dawn French as The Fat Lady in Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. A shit performance from a shit actress/comedian in an utterly unnecessary role.
