I can only imagine that watching a parent hop aboard the crazy train would put most kids off of religion for life.

No, they divorced. They did live under the same roof until the kids finished school. Ive never seen a divorce quite like it. It's all finishing up this year. I've been impressed with both of their devotion to their kids, and their ability to tolerate each other. I doubt I would have the same conviction if faced with a similar situation.

None personally in that camp, but I do know a couple that had the opposite happen. They were married in a secular ceremony, lived as atheists, raised their kids as atheists, her dad died and she became a Jehovah's Witness. Shit you not, crazy train pulled into the station, and she was tooting the horn.

He's stayed an atheist, and has been a big part of his kids life for the past 10 years. His daughter is graduating with honors from high school this week (GPA 4.45) and is firmly an atheist. His son kinda dropped out, skateboards and smokes pot, but also thinks that believing in a god is total BS.

It's a totally bizarre family dynamic to watch. They have really made a big effort to make the whole mess work, but from my perspective, just barely. If I was to make any predictions, the kids are going to get away from both the parents and try to find some space beyond the weirdsville that has been their home life over the past decade.

I'm wondering if anyone is or knows a parent who used to be very religious and then went through the process of becoming an atheist while the kids were young but old enough to believe everything you taught them up to then. Somewhat to very indoctrinated. Maybe as old as 10 or 13 and suddenly you what? Tell them it's not true? Sometimes we have talked about secular parenting, critical thinking skills for a parent who is already an atheist, but what about deeply believing people who thought they were doing the right thing teaching their children about that belief long enough for them to actually believe it, shielding them from outside influences, that sort of thing.
