I've read the first two books of the rifters trilogy (which is actually 4 books)by the same author, Peter Watts. I think Ty mentioned it in a post some time ago. Oddly they were available to be checked out electronically from my library system.

I like the books, even though some of the science is a bit over my head. Very interesting storyline. If you like the style I'm sure you'll like the rifters series as well.

Intriguing "First Contact" novel available under Creative Commons at this site above. Fascinating novel so far (about 25% in). Earth is basiclaly buzzed by a grid of self-destroying probes which take a snap shop of the entire planet on a one foot grid.

The novel has a (resurrected from old DNA)vampire ship captain,virtual reality, quantum physics, odd, flawed humans interacting. A lot of speculation about what "intelligence" and "language" means. Written in a very dry style reminiscent of William Gibson, I am digging this.
