Really it's only blasphemy for Catholics who have it from Papal authority that Mary remained a virgin. As far as I know protestants are fine with the idea of Mary and Joseph having gotten it on after Jesus was born.

My mom-in-law attends a similar church (United Church of Canada). They rarely take the bible seriously and never think that anybody is going to hell.

Which is a good step I guess. But why the facade? She's fairly up-front and unapologetic about the church being a social gathering and a forum for discussing political issues and social activism. The sense of community and desire for social activism are good things (it's a left-leaning church, thankfully), and I don't want to discourage that, but why wrap it in the cloak of a silly religion you mostly don't believe in the first place?

The optimist in me believes churches like this, or the one in the news story, are evidence of the beginning of the end for Christianity. A lot of them know it's all baloney, they're just going through the motions because it's tradition and carries a sense of community. But that'll die out soon when they realize those things can be found elsewhere.

Yeah, I had similar thoughts. Like, wait...you're saying a virgin birth is crazy talk, yet you HAVE A CHURCH. Wha...? This seems more something to get attention than to really advance any actual debate or thought.

It's lame. I kinda wonder what goes through the minds of believers like that though. They're clearly the more "liberal" kind. They just want to "get people talking" considering their plummeting attendance, and don't care too much about any possible blasphemy. Surely they must realize deep down that it's all just a fairy tale anyway.
