I think it's the fact that real men died in those place and of those injuries that makes it harder to watch for me. This is entirely personal, but I dislike the idea of being entertained by their sacrifice. I own the movie, however. I rarely watch it, and usually only when I'm thinking about my uncle (the marine) or grandfather (the naval gunner), both of whom fought and suffered for this country.

It's an emotional experience that I recognize as important, but not pleasurable.
