Okay, there are several possible interpretations, or theories. The Madonna references are endless, but glimpses Like A Prayer seemed most prominent.

To me some that make the most sense:

This is the bleak world gay men live in, and they are the soldiers. Yet they still dance and are joyful despite the harsh social 'wars' occuring. The song itself wasn't originally about this at all, but she's bent it into harmonizing with the visual 'plot.'

I think what she intended here was to express her envy of gay men and their courage, (watching from afar) and the many layers of conflict, especially between religion and sexuality--oppression, (being a nun) and seeking a higher moral worth, or being 'free' with your sexuality. It also seems to me she wants to join them, but they reject her.

The beds scene holds a plethora of possible interpretations. It could be the nun's fantasy, while it also shows completely gender-neutrality of sex roles, and plays with the idea of androgyny. Interesting also is the case of garments worn--the miltary uniforms empower the gay men, or give them a dominant demeanour, yet they're wearing high heels in several shots.

The German styling/European imagery seems to add another layer of shock, but also there's a very solemn tone. She establishes this quite well at the start I thought, she slows the pace right down when she sitting in the chair with the smoke rising.

I thought it was a good idea to completely contrast 'Telephone,' visually--monotonal colours, not bright and quirky, so we focus on what she's really trying to portray, and the movements of her dances, rather than getting distracted by whats on her head (to a degree.) A lot obviously is to intentionally make us feel uncomfortable, because its not what we're used to.

That was my disjointed analysis, anyway. I think 'Monster,' would have been a better fit.

It seems that I've almost reached the age where all modern pop music sounds like a china cabinet full of cats being pushed down the stairs.

Can anyone sum up what this song is about? Or is it all about the gay imagery of the video?
