Petition? How many do you need to sign to convince Daniel? 4, 5?
Would such a thing be doable? I don't know how the forum is currently coded or what options Patheos has available.
There was some discussion of giving moderators administrator status so you could ban spambots. Has that been tried yet?
aye
Aye.
@ Nox: No. I don't think Dan saw the post, and emailing him is like pissing in the ocean, unfortunately!
He makes money no matter what.
Just tell Dan he will make more money ... that will get a response.
Well, there's ten new spam topics littering the forums this afternoon (and undoubtedly more to come; Lily and edword seem to be busy little spambots).
I plan to tune out of the forums completely for the next seven days so as not to buff the hit count. I'll check back next Saturday to see if there's been any progress made on the problem.
I spent an hour and a half earlier, destroying tags created by spam-bots. And there's still an ocean more of them. This forum host is fullof fail.
As long as the archives are still intact, aye aye! I'd miss the quirky aspects of this forum though. A lot of forums are plain ugly as shit. Too many freakin boxes of information, it's too hard to pay attention to the things people are writing.
You could try making a meme with your request coming from a dead white guy or a celebrity or something.
RIGHT! Fellow mods, I've spent a lot of time cleaning up the tags; when you zap spam posts, could you also check to see if they've filled the tags with spam again? Easier to swat them one by one than spend hours on it again.
Honestly, I'm spending hours per day just keeping the forum clean. I can't keep this up.
It shouldn't be up to just you. Daniel doesn't seem to care or have any pride in his blog whatsoever. He is sort of like that person you used to know who used to post on a blog but drifted away, except it's his blog and he's still taking in checks. I'd complain to Patheos if you can't get in touch with him, maybe he will ditch it if they cut him, but oh well. Sick of the fewer and fewer amount of people and topics, not finding other blogs as rounded and it's sort of lonely out there without you guys. This happened to me once before, I speak of a forum I used to post at, it used to be really great, but I moved away and when I came back, it split up into a website forum and a usenet forum, and the usenetters sort of didn't find that too well and it failed, while others went to another forum where everyone, I wouldn't say "not friendly" but moving over to another established forum, I didn't like those people and clashed with them because they weren't up to snuff, they had their own things going on, their own jokes, their own stupid stuff they'd pat each other on the back and I hated it but I stuck around for a while anyway until it just got to be abusive. But anyway, I'd let Patheos know the admin is absent and the forums get a lot of spam and see what they say.
Or post one of the memes to the UF wall on facebook. I don't know who wants to do it, I don't want to be connected publicly, so whoever doesn't mind being connected to UF publicly might do it.
I'm talking to Patheos about this. We'll see what options we have...
Anything would be an improvement, honestly!
New moderation tools installed. Let's see if this helps...
Much appreciated, though I'm not sure they're working - The admin panel has a new "Moderation" link on it, but it just brings me back to the forum front-page; member controls remain unchanged, so it looks like we still can't just ban the bots. Looking at the Akismet stats, there's been a serious upsurge in the last month - Four and a half thousand so far this month. Must be a new version of xrumer out or something.
Edit: I tell a lie, I now have the option to "Warn" users, and there's a sub-option from there to ban them - Sweet. Forum sanity can be restored, thank you Dan.
Edit 2: Goodbye, Edword and Lily! The banhammer never felt so cathartic! I'm tempted to unban them just so the other mods can experience the pleasure of banning them too!
...and there was much rejoicing!
Vorjack, Elemenope, Custador, and Daniel,
I greatly appreciate all the work you guys put into maintaining the site and dealing with sh*t like this.
Awesome. Let's see if it reduces the amount of spam that comes through. I've also put in a request to install a CAPACHA for new user registrations, and that should pretty much solve anything else coming through.
Vorjack, Elemenope, and Custador are the best, most patient people in the world. Or at least in mine. ;) They've done an excellent job in keeping things going while I've been (mostly) away.
Krygschekalll havisky Viagra?
Just kidding just kidding guys~!
I so appreciate your efforts?
Nice report buttons. The mods are great. Snickers Workwear 3212 Trousers Road Test.
Dan, is there a way we can also implement a Capacha to add tags to existing posts, or better yet just remove the ability to do that? Our spamtastic friends are keyword stuffing the bejaysus out of the post tags here. Probably deleting fifty tags a day right now.
OK, so there's this big red window that pops up telling me there's a new report waiting for me, but the system won't let me resolve it in any way.
I think I resolved the report. Near as I can tell, someone spammed the post that kodie reported without resolving the report. So the report sat there with no post to link back to.
It was instructions on how to spam.
