I heard this on NPR the other day and thought it might be of interest.

Carlton Pearson was a prominent evangelical preacher, until he came to realize that a god that would condemn people to eternal torment simply for not being christian is a monster. He decided that hell doesn't exist, and that the salvation offered by Jesus is for all of humanity, whether they believe in him or not. This did not go over well with his community.

Sounds like what happened to Rob Bell more recently over his merely suggesting the possibility that Hell is a cruddy and abiblical doctrine.

Good for him for being a decent human being.
The idea removes a couple of huge elephants in the room of Christianity, but makes Christians feel less special, no surprise that he made many people angry.

My guess is that a lot of christians are genuinely afraid that society would fall apart without the threat of hell, so they react badly to any suggestion there's no such thing.
