    Yesterday I was doing some self motivated research on some things (as I often do when I am bored) and came across a thread here that was discussing self/home defense, castle doctrine, etc. (http://unreasonablefaith.com/forum/topic/jury-duty#post-14522) And I nearly cried when I saw people of differing opinions having a well mannered discussion. This is because one of my other hobbies, if you can call it that, is browsing new sites and reading the comments posted to the "articles". This usually leads to great amusement, but more often than not degrades into a tangent of unrelated political issues, mind reading, and name calling. I while i may not be a shining example of humanity or have perfect literary skills, I am utterly baffled by the ignorance/hate/content/etc that the majority of these "contributors" possess, and their dumbfounding inability to intelligently speak about things they claim to understand or believe/not believe in. Not to mention their blatant unwillingness to see reason, escpecially if it is contrary to their own previously stated beliefs.

    In short, and from what I have seen so far, I love you guys!

    Also, my name is Kevin.

    Hey Kevin, welcome to the forums!

    If you want to continue to have a favorable opinion, don't look at the Cycling thread. :)

    Welcome Kevin. Yeah, you might want to leave the cycling thread for another time.

    Cannot resist. And Actually i think I have read some of that thread. Doesn't hold a candle to the MSNBC hate mongering.

    EDIT: Ah yes, also I wont go to reddit from a work computer, so while i can't read the original story, i think the point was delivered a few posts down.

    Hi Kevin, and welcome to UF.

    We are a quirky, almost-civilized lot. We do get our dander up occasionally. Mostly, our ire is reserved for religious apologists who have not done their homework and trot out arguments that were refuted centuries ago. After the fiftieth time you've seen the 'No True Scotsman' argument or a refusal to acknowledge the Euthyphro Dilemma, it gets tedious, and we gets cranky.

    I'm a fairly mixed bag when it comes to any topic, though it usually boils down to stupid people and not stupid people. But fear not, I have been both.

    Hi K. I wandered over here from another board about a month or 2 ago. This is a fun group. They're usually civilized. Maybe one day I'll look up what the no true scotsman argument and euthyphro dilemma actually are, but I'm sticking with willfull ignorance for now. Does get thrown out a lot though. I looked up straw man once and just found myself annoyed every time it came up, so I figured less I knew about the jargon the better. Just won't use any.

    Welcome! I tend to post in spruts and stops that seem to have a strong correlation between my own business that seems to be either drinking from the fire hose or begging for a drop with my tin cup.

    I havnt been posting for awhile, so you can imagine how my business is going. I think my daughter is getting used to eating regularly, I have to break her of that before winter. I do make a point of reading the site once a day.

    So, where do you stand on the existence of a supernatural creator?

    Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize that half of all the rest are stupider than that.

    @ Revyloution "So, where do you stand on the existence of a supernatural creator?"

    Well, I was raised Christian, and while I haven't been to church in 10 years, I had continued to hold on to my past beliefs. But lately I have been struggling with a few things. Mostly, having the apparent right to choose, but eternal damnation if I choose poorly... that doesn't sit well with me and almost seems hypocritical (if that is even the right word for it). At the same time I find it hard to grasp that nothing created everything and that in the end it goes back to nothing. So in the mean time, I will choose to believe that something created everything while at the same time remaining ignorant to what that 'something' is, and NOT practice any religion. I am fairly certain there is a word for that, but it escapes me.

    Just because I can't help myself....

    Technically we can't even say that everything was created by 'nothing'. We can only model the big bang back to a singularity at Planck time. After that it is anyone's guess. For all we know this singularity of all matter/energy could have just been sitting there 'forever', although using a time descriptive in such a situation doesn't make much sense either. So basically we have this time which we currently have no way to model or have any data about what happened before it so it is impossible to say anything about what the situation was then.

    On the other hand we do have examples of 'something' coming from 'nothing' as far as the terms are generally understood. Virtual particles are an example of this and you can look at electrons. Electrons don't really orbit the nucleus of an atom, there exists a sort of probability field around the nucleus in which you are likely to be able to detect the electron. But to the precision of our current tools for observing the sub-atomic, electrons are kind of there (existing) then not-there (nothing). Perhaps someday we will be able to fully observe this world just like we can now observe cells, atoms and so on which were once impossible, but for now for all intensive purposes stuff is popping in out of 'nothing' all the time. Or as Lawrence Krauss sometimes says, 'nothing is unstable'.

    If by "go back to nothing" you mean the big-crunch theory of entropy and all that good shit: Ain't gonna happen. The threshold where all matter would eventually come back together again was something like 12 billion light-years (this is from memory so I might be a billion out here or there), and currently the most distant shiz we know of is 14 billion light-years away. So it's aaaaall gravy. Tasty, entropic gravy.

    Welcome.

    In my experience you will find thoughtful, smart people here who also aren't afraid to bring down the hammer on BS. An excellent combiniation in my opinion.

    "go back to nothing" I meant death being the end. No afterlife, no memories, no thoughts, just gone.

    And as for what Custador and Jeremiah said, I don't science good. I do, however, enjoy me some good gravy.

    @K Dubya

    Is no problem. Just that 'how could something come from nothing' is a common argument in apologetisc so I can't help but comment on it. :)

    And sure the nothingness of death is kind of a bummer but then again you won't be around to feel sad or regretful about it either so...

    @Gringa
    That quote was a George Carlin if I am not mistaken.

    I was only able to find slight comfort in the fact that I wont have to worry about being dead after the fact. It's just hard to wrap my brain around is all.

    And as I said, I was raised Christian so that may be why the "something from nothing" is in my head somewhere.

    Yes, that was a George Carlin quote, slightly tweaked.
