Hey all - I was wondering if there are any other religions who have "evangelicals" like the Christians? I assume Jehova's Whitnesses can be considered evangelical since they go door-to-door, and Mormons like to baptize dead people... I guess that counts. But what about other religions?
Evangelical Jews?

I would think that Muslims probably evangelize to some extent. At least, the Nation of Islam - which is only nominally Islamic, really - must because there are always athletes changing their names to Kareem or Muhammad.

Both Christians and Muslims are commanded to spread their religion. Jews are not. It makes for a very interesting practical as well as sociological distinction.

In the Pentateuch, they don't spread their religion — they just kill those who are not God's chosen and are in the land God gave his chosen people. Still seems like that war is being fought...

I think you've misunderstood the word "evangelical."
In context with Christianity, evangelical doesn't mean "involved in evangelism." I know that's counter-intuitive (believe me, I think it's very confusing). But Jehova's Witnesses and Mormons don't count as evangelicals, because although the evangelize, they don't match the definition of "evangelical Christianity".

hmm, i may have misunderstood your original post...
I retract, and restate:
Evangelicals aren't actually called evangelicals because of their direct evangelism. there, that's what I meant...

If Jehovah's Witnesses believe only 144,000 souls will go to Heaven, why do they proselytize?

To increase their own odds.
Yes, really. No, don't do the math. The more faithful they are to the calling, the more likely they'll be in the 144k.

How do they know how many of the 144k have already gone to heaven? Is there a big sign like at McDonalds... 100,000 served?

Common misunderstanding about JW's.
144,000 go to heaven to serve as 'kings and priests' before god. The rest of them stay on earth in a newly restored paradise where they live forever.
They aren't proselytizing for more of the heavenbound. They are looking for more with the earthly hope.
It's how they interpret a variety of scriptures, but most especially the 'little flock, great flock' passage. Little flock goes to heaven, great flock stays on earth.

hmm I like that idea. I'm co-opting it into JoeBism. So now we're at a double hell where the wicked double burn for double eternity (woo Paschal), A paradise consisting of endless parties of every type imaginable to choose from, a purgatory that consists of waiting in line outside the club (with the length of the line and obnoxiousness of the people in line near you adjusted by how good/bad you were) and a brand new JW inspired VIP section inside the club.

You don't go to Heaven when you die, you are just dead / unconscious until the Second Coming, when everyone is resurrected and 144,000 of them ascend to the Kingdom (est in Heaven 1914... really!) that governs Earth (where the rest live happily ever after).
Also: thanks Ty. I kinda sorta understood that, but it's much more coherent explained by someone who doesn't believe it.
