Congrats on elected an openly gay mayor, Houston. I didn't think it possible in that state.
Good for you, Texas.

Cities pretty much everywhere in the US are liberal. The rural areas...pretty much everywhere in the US are conservative. For a fun time, overlay a population by county map with county returns for any presidential election over the last 20 years. Almost *completely* without exception, the urban counties go for the democrat, the rural counties go for the republican.

Elemenope is right - without New York City, the state of New York would be quite red.

So would Washington state be, without Seattle: crazy right?

Pretty much. The coastal, more densely populated counties (including, of course, Seattle) went blue, the rest of the state went red.

I live in a midwestern swing state, but my college town went almost 4 to 1 for Obama in the election. Cities, especially ones built around a university are much more liberal than the rural.

"So would Washington state be, without Seattle: crazy right?"
I just realized that this sounded like a question.
It wasn't, I lived there for several years. Washington state would be red, if it wasn't for Seattle. I'm bad at editing. It is interesting, though, that in basically every blue state with a large city, there are movements to split the state for more accurate representation. California has talked about splitting, New York has talked about splitting, Washington state has talked about splitting... am I missing any?Granted, it isn't entirely due to a desire to split the votes: Seattle contains a huge percentage of the state's population, but a far, far larger percentage of the infrastructure and budget goes to Seattle. Same problem with New York City v. upstate New York. I've always wondered if a city with over a million people could actually support its own infrastructure, or if it requires a large rural population to offset costs.

That's why we call the area of virginia around Washington DC "The People's Republic of Northern Virginia." The rest of the state is totally different (read: RED)
