   As a former Catholic, I always thought it was a good idea to have a pope - someone who grew up in today's world who could interpret the bible in a context that makes sense for the people of today. However, I always saw that the church had not quite caught up with today's world on the equality issue. Some steps have been taken - for example, now girls are allowed to tend the altar during Mass. I thought this was a big step towards having female priests. However equiality for gay people is not even on the church's radar. I think we'll see female priests LONG before we see gay marriage in the church.

   I can never work out if the Pope is thick, living on another planet or just plain evil. So far the arguments he's made it relation to the proposed equality bill just don't make sense to me. As far as I can tell he's claiming that removing the right to discriminate based on religious beliefs is correct but to discriminate against religious beliefs is not. He can't have it both ways and just as importantly religious beliefs don't get to play the special I'm more important card.
