Don't look at this series as your stereotypical fantasy series, with swords and sorcery and blood and war and blah blah blah. This is a drama series primarily, not action. There is action, but it comes later.
Really? About the only thing I can remember from the first book is that there were wars. Lots of them.

A Clash of Kings is where the fighting really begins. There's some trouble between the Starks and the Lannisters at the end of the first book, sure, but again... that's at the last 25% of that first book.

I loved the books. And I love lots of movies and TV shows, and I'm especially predisposed to love this one. But every episode I think, "Man, can't they tighten this up a bit? Couldn't they have made this far more interesting?"
It's not the absence of fighting that's making it slow, it's the way the character development is going and the lack of interesting things going on. I didn't feel that way at all in the first few books, and it was a much longer time commitment.
I'd say it was just me, but the other guys I watched it with felt the same way.
Anyway, my 2 cents.
