Kodie: My point was simply that asking for empirical evidence in every situation *doesn't* happen. And neither do most folks only rely on their senses. Most things we take on authority, without having even had experienced personally ourselves. Not all things, but many of them.
I don't always see a problem with that. EXCEPT when people demand 100% about something. It's silly. Hell, our brain doesn't even give us that without error.

Increasingly unlikely claims will generally require corresponding levels of evidence. While I have not looked at the moons of Jupiter with my own eyes, I have looked at the Earth's moon with my own eyes. I am quite satisfied that moons exist. I have also looked at Jupiter with my own eyes. When telescopic images of Jupiter are shown to me that include moons, it is not an enormous leap to accept that Jupiter has moons, and that those images are in fact of those moons.
Yes, we can't know anything with 100% certainty, but as I said, the bottom of that slope is solipsism, which is useful as a thought exercise, but not much else.

Absolutely and claiming that it's just base on authority is incorrect. Firstly it's not mis-placed authority and secondly it ties in with what we already know and is therefore plausible.
If NASA announced that they had discovered the composition of one of the moons of Jupiter and it was made of similar materials as other moons then you'd probably believe it, if on the other hand it was made of cheese you probably wouldn't ...

I agree with Jabster. Why so pushy about other people's moods and reactions? You want to say we're idiots, make comments on how intelligent you thought we were, that we should understand everything you say and how you meant it to come across, you are sensing hostility where there was none, and that we should lighten up when you think so. Your sense of tone is just not very good and I don't think it's is Jabster who needs to lighten up. Maybe it's me. Maybe we all can't read your mind. Maybe you should stop accusing people of wronging you and being too stupid to understand what you're saying until you can figure out how to be relatable and roll with it. Too many of these topics are how to fix something that shouldn't need to be fixed, it's getting distracting.

Personal I love cheese but trying to say which type of cheese is better is all a bit pointless. I like a strong Cheddar but it's so different to Stilton you can't really compare them ... saying that my favourite cheese at the moment is Stinking Bishop.

If one judged from this thread alone... "personal attacks" is a fluid subjective ruling. And the request to cease them isn't really taken very seriously.
But hey... such it is.
And Brie is great. But doesn't beat Stilton.

The difference between a personal attack and just being off-topic is....? Let's all refrain from addressing anyone on the basis of their being persistently annoying to try to talk to, or let's all refrain from attacking them, calling them names, having names called back. Two different things. But hey, when you get yourself off on the wrong foot, aligning yourself with the mod when someone is hoping you'll adjust your attitude a little isn't probably going to get you back on the right foot in a hurry, not that we're a mob or anything. While having an abrasive and straight-shooting personality certainly can have its charms when necessary, there's such a thing as behaving too comfortably that makes others uncomfortable. I'd rather enjoy each other's company very soon and hope that feeling is mutual.
The mod said, the mod said. I think he has a name, and he asked us to be nice, all of us. That said, I don't have a favorite cheese because I live an unrefined life. If it was puns, I'd be down with it.
