Leadership myths

There are a lot of myths about leadership out there, which can look highly plausible when you’re just a regular Pagan, and can become a confusing source of discomfort and bemusement when you step up to run things. This is especially true if your first encounter with the myths comes when other people start applying them to you. … [Read more...]

Moots and easy places to start

There are a number of easy ways of doing meet ups. Simply getting people together may be the sum of your intent at this stage. It’s worth noting that once you have Pagans meeting up, there’s every chance that will evolve and as the person who started it, you may be called upon to do other things. Whether you choose to or not is of course entirely up to you. … [Read more...]

A bit of philosophy

While we’re poking around in those practical issues let’s sidestep and think about the whole idea of leadership. What are we leading? What do we want to lead? I think people who simply want to lead people – i.e. telling others what to do, are no great asset to the Pagan community. That can be an ego trip that does the tripper more harm than good, as well. It’s just not a good way to live. It is better to think of this in terms of leading events and activities, rather than leading … [Read more...]

Getting Started

We’ll assume for the purposes of this one that you get some say in what you’re doing when you take on a leadership role.  I know it doesn’t always work like that, but sometimes it does. Even if something falls on you unexpectedly these pointers about how to get started will be somewhat relevant. Quite often the calling is simply to ‘do something’.  That may come from external demand, quite often is comes from within. The desire to be part of a Pagan community can often be what … [Read more...]

Welcome to the course

We’re still in the early stages getting this course moving, so, a few words to be going along with about what it does and how this all works. The course itself will be available through this blog. People who don’t sign up for it will be able to see the opening couple of paragraphs of any given post, and that’s it. If you do sign up you can access the content, and there will be ways to interact, and ask questions. … [Read more...]

Becoming a Pagan leader

We know what a Pagan leader is supposed to look like. For a start they have lived enough years to gain maturity and wisdom. They’ve been properly taught and have studied mysteries in depth. They’ve also worked in the community for many years. Consequently your Pagan leader has a broad understanding of everything to do with all Pagan paths and an in-depth knowledge of several subjects in which they have chosen to specialise. They are aware of modern Pagan history, and ancient Paganism. … [Read more...]

Pagan Leadership Experience

As I’m asking you to accept me as someone with the knowledge and experience to teach a Pagan leadership course, I think it only fair to explain a bit about who I am and what my background is. Like many Pagans who end up running things, I didn’t particularly seek it, and certainly not to the degree to which I ended up doing it. A combination of jobs evolving into bigger and more responsible jobs, things falling out of the sky, requests from my community to run things, and occasional mad … [Read more...]

Introduction time

This September, I’m going to start teaching an online course about Pagan leadership. It will be available here. The reason I’m not starting sooner, in case you were wondering… is that I currently live on a boat with limited electricity and internet access. By September things will be very different and I’ll consequently have a lot more scope to be present and useful. As it stands, I do a lot of informal teaching work through my blogs here at Patheos, and over at … [Read more...]
