If this blog is your first acquaintance with the practice of magick, you will hear the terms “grounding” and “centering” used frequently in occult circles; mostly in that order, maybe because it flows better off of the tongue. I like to call it “Centering and Grounding,” because that’s the order you do it in. If you can’t center, you will have trouble grounding.
Centering is feeling focused in your energy and your sense of Self. There is a place in your body which likely feels like the center of your being. Some say it is in the navel, some just below the navel, some in the solar plexus, but whatever place feels right to you is probably appropriate. It also involves aligning your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual selves. When you are centered, you feel connected within yourself, and you can access the spiritual and astral plans with relative ease. Highly empathic people often have trouble centering, because they can’t discern which of the many emotions they feel are theirs or others’.
Grounding is feeling connected with the earth and the world around you. You may be asked to ground excess energy after a ritual (or feel you should if you practice alone.) You will find very quickly that running a lot of magickal energy is a great deal like running an electric current. Sometimes it even has effects in the physical world that people can see or react to. Especially if magick is new, your watches might stop running or start running in bizarre ways, you might give people electric shocks or feel extremely warm when you touch them, or your computers could keep malfunctioning. When I first started practicing magick, I destroyed no less than eleven stereos in two weeks! (Yes, this is probably where the idea of Witches souring milk or running clocks backwards by their presence came from.) This is due to the changes of energy in your body, and it may mean that you are not properly grounded. Once you have established that connection to earth, you can allow excess, unneeded energy to dissipate into the earth instead of remaining stored in your body. The next exercise is one example of a way to do that. Another is to touch the earth with your hands or the soles of your bare feet. There are many more; the key is to establish a physical or energetic connection to the earth.
