Lesson 41: Bringing It Together (Multiple Trance Induction Methods)

When you bring multiple methods of trance induction together, they can be even more effective than individual methods alone.  Most Wiccan rituals use multiple trance induction methods to create the necessary altered state of consciousness for magickal work.  Not all traditions will use all of these methods, but some of the most commonly used one are: Visual driving - tools of the ritual, altar clothes, robes, costumes, decorations, setting, candles Auditory driving - chants, ritual … [Read more...]

Lesson 40: Olfactory and Gustatory Driving

Olfactory driving is using your sense of smell, or pheromones, to induce a trance.  Many things can accomplish this; incense, aromatherapy, smells that have memories associated with them, and so forth. Gustatory driving is using anything that you swallow or ingest (or don’t, such as in the case of starvation) to induce a trance.  This includes aromatherapy, herbs, overeating a turkey dinner, starvation, and of course, drugs of various stripes. We’ll be focusing on these two methods of … [Read more...]

Lesson 39: Traumatic Driving

Some trances are driven entirely by traumas or suffering.  Pain has a rhythm, and a consciousness-changing effect, all its own.  We’ll be revisiting this in Chapter Seven. Exercise 38:  Breathe Through the Pain I would not advocate deliberately causing yourself pain, but the next time that you experience a significant pain, rather than reaching for the nearest painkiller, try “breathing through the pain.”  This will look and feel a lot like Lamaze techniques.  Be aware of the cycles … [Read more...]

Lesson 37: Binaural Beats

Two tones close to each other will induce a response in the brain equivalent to the difference between them.  The brain reacts to the subsonic tone in between.  These rhythms are known as binaural "two sound" beats.  The ears do not actually hear the sound, but the brain creates the tonal effect.  For instance, a 495 Hz tone and a 505 Hz tone have a “carrier frequency” of 500 Hz, which is right between them.  The difference being 10 Hz, this produces a subsonic 10 Hz beat which is … [Read more...]

Lesson 36: Isochronic Tones

Isochronic tones are regular beats of a single tone, often repeated in very quick cycles.  There are many software companies and New Age musicians taking advantage of this technology, but we’ve been using it for millennia.  They are sometimes produced in nature by campfires, wind, rivers, and rain, but can also be found in machinery noises such as engines, the thrumming of train tracks or electric fans, artificially created noises such as the click of playing cards in bike tires or the whir … [Read more...]

Lesson 35: Auditory Driving

One of the most effective methods of brainwave entrainment to cause a trance is auditory.  We have been using this method for thousands of years, right back to drums and rattles in dancing, meditation, and shamanism, but recently we have begun to understand the science behind it.  In the following video I review the course thus far, then offer two exercises in auditory driving. Monaural Beats Monaural beats are created by presenting two different tones at slightly different pitches, creating … [Read more...]

Lesson 32: Sleep Magick

Sleeping is a natural state of altered consciousness that every human being experiences.  And sleeping facilitates dreaming, which is perhaps the most interesting naturally-induced altered state of consciousness we know of.  We require dreaming.  Without it, our bodies and minds do not heal, and you really can die from lack of sleep. Dreaming lends itself very well to psychic work with some conscious effort.  My first psychic experiences were dreams that came true.  I started having them … [Read more...]

Lesson 29: Methods of Trance Induction

There are hundreds of different methods of inducing a trance, which can be classified by the means used: 1.  Auditory and rhythmic driving (drumming, music, guided meditations, etc.); 2.  Kinesthetic driving (dancing, mudras, rituals, yoga, breathing and sexual stimulation); 3.  Visual driving (visual meditations, mandala, pendulums, film, art, yantra, strobe lights, cloud-watching, etc.); 4.  Olfactory driving (perfume, incense, oils, pheromones, flowers, and any scent that has … [Read more...]

Lesson 27: Introduction to Trance

Magick is the art of changing consciousness in conformity with Will. -          Dion Fortune Welcome to the second unit in the Witch's Eight Paths of Power!  In Gerald Gardner's Book of Shadows, the second of the Eight Paths, which he called the Eightfold Way, was "Trance; Projection of the Astral."  Why don't we dive right in? What, exactly, is a trance? Technically, any state of consciousness; awake, asleep, comatose, hypnotized, and otherwise, is a “trance.”  But when … [Read more...]

Lesson 26: Review of “Intent” and Self-Evaluation

Well, conveniently the New Year is around the corner, and we have finished the first unit on Intent.  Congratulations! Good job for sticking with it!  How do you feel you are doing so far?  Take some time now to review what you've learned, and consider what you might be able to do to improve upon that work.  You can write in your magickal journal or Book of Shadows, or simply run through a mental evaluation for your own purposes.  Go over anything you feel you didn't grasp; catch up … [Read more...]
