Hillary is a doctoral student in American Studies and holds previous degrees in development economics (McGill University) and history (University of Toronto). She has worked in various capacities: as a food bank coordinator in Montreal, as a development officer in the UK, and as a tour guide in the U.S. and Canada. At Harvard, she teaches undergraduates and is currently a Research Fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. She works more widely in the community to foster interfaith dialogue with the Pluralism Project, the International Association for Religious Freedom and, currently, as a consultant for a PBS/WGBH documentary called "God in America".

Hillary's areas of research include pilgrimage, travel and tourism, material culture and Christianity, spirituality and aging, U.S. history and religion, Christian popular culture

Hillary's courses include: The Evangelical Tradition in the North Atlantic Region, 1700-2000; Religion in America, 1630-1870; Religion and Public Policy; The Politics of Storytelling; Religion in a Multicultural America.
