The church in the 21st century is neglecting to preach about the resurrection, according to a new book by popular Christian blogger Adrian Warnock. “Jesus’ resurrection is often only mentioned at Easter time. But if we take someone to the cross and leave them there, we have only done half the job,” says first-time author Warnock, whose book, Raised with Christ, has just been published in the UK and USA. “Not preaching about the resurrection is a major reason for... Read more

This might sound too fabulous to be true, but genetics seems to have confirmed that a tribe made up from the descendants of Jewish priests are living in southern Africa: Their oral traditions claim that their ancestors were Jews who fled the Holy Land about 2,500 years ago. It may sound like another myth of a lost tribe of Israel, but British scientists have carried out DNA tests which confirm their Semitic origin. These tests back up the group’s belief that a... Read more

How It Works « The Light Project is a unique service for a local church. For $1 per house they will distribute free copies of John’s gospel on your behalf with the church’s contact information included on the gospel. At the moment this is a USA-only service. It looks like an interesting idea. I have often thought about which gospel may be best to hand a non-Christian. It might well be the case that one gospel or another might be... Read more

“I think we all sin by needlessly disobeying the apostolic injunction to “rejoice” as much as by anything else.”  C. S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain. Very many Christians give the impression that God orders us to be miserable for him. Some even imply that the more miserable we are, the more holy we are.  This is a million miles away from the Bible’s frequent and repeated commands to us to be full of joy in the Lord.  Many church... Read more

So said George to my wife just recently. She asked him, “Why?” and he replied, “Because he loves me!”  Talk about out of the mouths of babes and infants. He will be three in a few days’ time. Read more

I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone whose background is “Reformed” or conservative evangelical and whose faith seems to be somewhat doctrine-centered and dry. In fact I can think of people I might like to give it to. I would think that anyone like that who read this book would find it acceptable – and if they then took its message to heart their faith would be transformed. I hope and pray that God uses the book in this... Read more

This is a classic quote from Grudem about why he prefers essentially literal translations (sometimes called word-for-word)  over the so-called dynamic equivalent (sometimes called idea for idea) For more about Bible translation see my interview with the ESV Bible translators: “I cannot teach theology or ethics from a dynamic equivalent Bible. I tried the NIV for one semester, and I gave it up after a few weeks. Time and again I would try to use a verse to make a... Read more

I received another email (see the first), which I have permission to share anonymously. It shows that I was not entirely right. I still believe, however, that for most people leading our evangelism with creationism is not the best way. I think that stories like this tell us that we must treat every inquirer as an individual, and what might be helpful for one person might not be for another: My email may be one of so few that your... Read more

This book is one of the most important, in my humble opinion, ever written on the topic of the resurrection. It is not that Warnock has necessarily said anything that has not been said before in different places and in different ways. Instead, the value in the book is that Warnock has made the sort of hum-drum reality of the resurrection come to life for the church and the Christian! The resurrection of Christ, far more than just some historical... Read more
