You can <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.patheos.com.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs\/adrianwarnock\/files\/2011\/07\/2f0fee45-e3e2-4e3b-886b-e1ed1d0ca913.mp3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">download the audio<\/a>, or read my notes here:<\/p>\n<p>We saw yesterday what it means to get started in the race, and how to get rid of things that tie us down. <strong>But in the race we can get weary.<\/strong> Now we are told to <strong>consider him<\/strong>. It is a pondering.\u00a0 Keep your eyes on him.\u00a0 Christ genuinely is the answer.\u00a0 Paul said we don\u2019t preach ourselves, but Jesus preached himself all the time \u201ccome to me!\u201d\u00a0 He presented himself as the answer.\u00a0 He inspires robust faith. Terry spoke about an old Chinese believer he once met who had suffered prison, but said, \u201cnothing compares to the cross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t forget the word that addresses you as sons. <\/strong>God sent Jesus to demonstrate what sonship looks like to us, and to bring many sons to glory.\u00a0 He is looking for many people like Jesus. He will shape them, mould them, grow them.\u00a0 We are not just sinners who found our way to heaven, we are sons of God!<\/p>\n<p><strong>He is working for our holiness<\/strong>.\u00a0 God is looking to bring us through. When we feel pressure it is not because he has lost us from his gaze, it is proof that we belong. The true believer knows that God has his hand on him, that he is taking him through trials.\u00a0 It is evidence of God\u2019s love for us.<\/p>\n<p>When the eagle stirs the nest she is very focused and has a goal.\u00a0 She wants her young to fly. It is proof she has ambition for her young.\u00a0 She wants them to catch the breeze.\u00a0 <strong>God disciplines his sons, that\u2019s the evidence of his love.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God says Jacob I loved, Esau I hated.\u00a0 But look at his life, does he look like one specially loved? He has to run away from home, sleeps in the open air, falls in love, is given seven years later the wrong one.\u00a0 Esau was rich without the hassles Jacob had.\u00a0 But Jacob knows how to bless Pharaoh.\u00a0 Jacob is put through all sorts of trials. You are to know that God who begun a work in you will complete it.\u00a0 He uses things that happen to us.\u00a0 The Bible teaches us, but experiences also get under our skin and into our inner person.<\/p>\n<p>People might steal stuff.\u00a0 They might steal your reputation, perhaps blog stuff about you things that are not true.\u00a0 People suffer the loss. Disappointment, delay, things we don\u2019t understand.\u00a0 <strong>There is something in us that wants to know <\/strong>(see Adam and Eve\u2019s temptation).\u00a0 God lets things happen to you that make no sense at all.<\/p>\n<p>He is doing these things because he loves us like a father.\u00a0 God does it that we might share his holiness.\u00a0 God has set an incredible goal for us.\u00a0 What kind of privilege is that? We can get smug and think we have our doctrine straight.\u00a0 But God keeps on disciplining us so that we continue to grow us.\u00a0 We need shake up experiences that wake us up.\u00a0 He does it to save us from pride.\u00a0 The Bible says of the people of God that he led them through the wilderness to humble them.<\/p>\n<p>King David was anointed, became the darling of Israel through his defeating the enemy, then finds himself hiding in a cave.\u00a0 God cares about us. He wants us on course.\u00a0 It is so that we don\u2019t trust in ourselves but in him who raises from the dead.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/298\/2011\/07\/CJP%252520MS4%2525202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes God breaks us to make us. <\/strong>Brokenness is not everything.\u00a0 But the Bible does say that God will look at the one who is humble and contrite and trembles at his word.\u00a0 Sometimes we have to be softened so we can more sensitively serve those you serve.\u00a0 The psalmist says, \u201cit was good for me that I was afflicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>People who suffer don\u2019t automatically become holy.<\/strong> Some of them do, but some of them become bitter.\u00a0 It is only those who are trained by the experience who benefit from it.\u00a0 It is very possible to go through a tough time and not discern.\u00a0 Some people shake off suffering, and didn\u2019t learn a thing.\u00a0 Don\u2019t despise it.\u00a0 Don\u2019t miss the point.\u00a0 Don\u2019t faint.\u00a0 Don\u2019t regard it lightly.\u00a0 Don\u2019t say, \u201cOh, you don\u2019t love me!\u201d\u00a0 Don\u2019t go down the tube when God starts dealing with you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t allow a root of bitterness to grow up, spoiling many.<\/p>\n<p><strong> God sometimes uses people to humble us. <\/strong> We need to obtain grace.\u00a0 God uses agents in our lives, we mustn\u2019t focus on them.\u00a0 We must ask God what are you teaching me?\u00a0 Don\u2019t let bitterness shape your character.\u00a0 Instead obtain grace.\u00a0 It is the only alternative.\u00a0 There will be waves of difficulty.\u00a0 You either let them pile up and become bitter or obtain grace and let them go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus learned obedience.<\/strong> How does the perfect one learn? It was through the things he suffered.\u00a0 He learned to be a man, to stand where we stand.\u00a0 He learned from people treating him shamefully.\u00a0 He was perfected through the things that he suffered.<\/p>\n<p>When bad things happen, sometimes even family members mistreat us badly.\u00a0 We must get free of it. I don\u2019t want to keep going over that letter. I want to let it go.\u00a0 We need churches to be free from people who are carrying bitterness.\u00a0 Don\u2019t carry the hurt.\u00a0 Maybe a leader bullied them before, now they respond to the new pastor badly.\u00a0 You can mess up Gods great plan in your church.\u00a0 Let God deal with you as a son so I can share your holiness.\u00a0 Right to the end, Jesus said forgive them.\u00a0 He wants many sons in glory.\u00a0 He wants us all to be like that.\u00a0 Obtain grace. Refuse bitterness.\u00a0 Let God purge it out of your soul.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The word dialogues with you<\/strong>, addresses you, reasons with you.\u00a0 It is saying \u201ccome on enter into understanding my son, my daughter, I love you, I am for you!\u201d\u00a0 \u201cGod is not getting even, he got even at the cross!\u201d RT Kendall.\u00a0 He never turns against you.\u00a0 God is not trying to loose you.\u00a0 God hasn\u2019t forgotten you.\u00a0 God is in control.\u00a0 He is handling this.\u00a0 God doesn\u2019t want you to be lame.\u00a0 Not godly to just dismiss people.\u00a0 He wants to set you free from the way you are.\u00a0 So that you can be healed.\u00a0 If you are trained by it.\u00a0 Gods goal was to fix it, but if we misinterpret then we will be weaker still.\u00a0 You are the apple of his eye, his workmanship.\u00a0 Learn, humble yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there anything in your life where you are touchy? <\/strong> Maybe theres something in you that hurts.\u00a0 You think people are getting at me again, they don\u2019t understand me.\u00a0 Loosen it up.\u00a0 Let God deal with you. Face the pain, don\u2019t have no-go areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pursue peace with all men. <\/strong>It is an active word.\u00a0 Strive for.\u00a0 Make every effort.\u00a0 Afterwards you will understand.\u00a0 What is happening now you may not grasp.\u00a0 But sorrow endures for the night and joy comes in the morning.\u00a0 God is on your case.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know the discipline of the Lord, it is then that you should be worried!\u00a0 Those whom the Lord loves he disciplines.\u00a0 He is looking after you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be a grumbler.\u00a0 Walk in freedom.\u00a0 Don\u2019t carry bitterness for another day, leave it here.\u00a0 Obtain grace.\u00a0 Pursue peace.\u00a0 Make straight paths.\u00a0 God wants to engage with you right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Terry began by speaking about his own book, Spirit-Filled Church, having first made the point that there are also many books in the bookstore here that he recommends that are written by writers outside our movement. \u00a0Bob Roberts, Ed Stetzer, and many other names familiar to readers of the blog are represented here.
