The Victorian era was the time of great advance. Continual industrial revolution. Civilisation. As the 20th Century began, mankind was full of hope. The bold notion grew that the Human Spirit would itself evolve and leave behind its savage impulses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Then, one fateful day a war began so terrible that it was called the Great War<\/strong>, and touted as the war to end all wars. Europe, so long seen as the seedbed of democracy and civilization descended into barbarity.<\/p>\n

And just in Britain almost 900,000 soldiers<\/strong> lost their lives.<\/p>\n

The Tower of London has been poignantly swathed with a ceramic poppy for every British soldier<\/a> who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the biggest tragedy of all was that far from ending wars, World War I led inevitably to World War II.<\/p>\n

And the wars have never truly stopped since.<\/p>\n

And the savagery of men continues to be displayed both by and towards the Jewish people, driven from Europe by the culmination of centuries of persecution.<\/p>\n

And so the war that continues exactly one hundred years later in the Gaza Strip is in some senses Europe\u2019s war, whatever side we choose to defend.<\/p>\n

And war continues in the Ukraine, in Iraq, in Syria, and elsewhere. Though thousands continue to die, we conveniently choose to ignore their plight, as our media, bored, moves on to the latest story.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t believe that history World War I was entirely pointless. But it sure must have seemed that way to the wives, the mothers, and the daughters of the fallen.<\/p>\n

The dream of lasting global peace lay tattered by this \u201cGreat War.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is a dream that despite all our best efforts since, few have seriously dared to hope for again.<\/p>\n

And yet, WE do have a hope.<\/p>\n

A time is coming, says the God of the Jews when,<\/p>\n

. . .they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore (Isaiah 2:4).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And though some have twisted even this promise<\/a> into a hope that we ourselves will one day make our own peace, the reality is far more humbling.<\/p>\n

That great day, the day of real peace, will only come when we turn to the Prince of Peace. When God himself will be our peace.<\/p>\n

\n

It shall come to pass in the latter days<\/span>
\nthat the mountain of the house of the\u00a0LORD<\/span><\/span>
\nshall be established as the highest of the mountains,<\/span>
\nand shall be lifted up above the hills;<\/span>
\nand all the nations shall flow to it,<\/span>
\nand many peoples shall come, and say:<\/span>
\n\u201cCome, let us go up to the mountain of the\u00a0LORD<\/span>,<\/span>
\nto the house of the God of Jacob,<\/span>
\nthat he may teach us his ways<\/span>
\nand that we may walk in his paths.\u201d<\/span>
\nFor out of Zion shall go the law,<\/span>
\nand the word of the\u00a0LORD<\/span>\u00a0from Jerusalem.<\/span>
\nHe shall judge between the nations,<\/span>
\nand shall decide disputes for many peoples;<\/span>
\nand they shall beat their swords into plowshares,<\/span>
\nand their spears into pruning hooks;<\/span>
\nnation shall not lift up sword against nation,<\/span>
\nneither shall they learn war anymore . . .<\/span><\/p>\n

The haughty looks of man shall be brought low,<\/p>\n

and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled,<\/span>
\nand the\u00a0LORD<\/span>\u00a0alone will be exalted in that day.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the\u00a0LORD<\/span>\u00a0of hosts has a day<\/span>
\nagainst all that is proud and lofty,<\/span>
\nagainst all that is lifted up\u2014and it shall be brought low\u00a0. . .<\/span><\/p>\n

In that day mankind will cast away<\/p>\n

their idols of silver and their idols of gold,<\/p>\n

which they made for themselves to worship,<\/span>
\nto the moles and to the bats,<\/span>
\nto enter the caverns of the rocks<\/span>
\nand the clefts of the cliffs,<\/span>
\nfrom before the terror of the\u00a0LORD<\/span>,<\/span>
\nand from the splendor of his majesty,<\/span>
\nwhen he rises to terrify the earth.<\/span>
\nStop regarding man<\/span><\/strong>
\nin whose nostrils is breath,<\/span><\/strong>
\nfor of what account is he?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
