Casting out demons, mighty works.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we could add preaching and leading.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe writing a blog.<\/p>\n<p>Doing things \u2018in Jesus name\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Part of the \u2018in crowd\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Looking\u00a0terribly spiritual to others.<\/p>\n<p>But not to the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>No to the One who counts.<\/p>\n<p>Who sees through hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p>Who examines\u00a0the activity?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>More success in work or ministry?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>More followers admiring you?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>More legalistic following of rules?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Lacking Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Lacking knowing Him.<\/p>\n<p>Lacking hearing from Him.<\/p>\n<p>Lacking obedience to Him.<\/p>\n<p>Lacking following Him from the heart.<\/p>\n<p>Lacking a foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Building impressive houses, that rest on shifting sands.<\/p>\n<p>Preparing for a fall.<\/p>\n<p>A fall that can come after decades of\u00a0faking it.<\/p>\n<p>Countless years of running on fumes.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking you can make it on your own.<\/p>\n<p>Fooling yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Believing you are doing God a favour.<\/p>\n<figure place.<\/p>\n<p>Loving Money rather than your maker.<\/p>\n<p>Being impatient with others less \u2018impressive\u2019 than yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Dispensing pain and rejection.<\/p>\n<p>Not love and acceptance.<\/p>\n<p>Praying pharisee prayers.<\/p>\n<p>Or not praying at all.<\/p>\n<p>Reading the Bible so you can help others.<\/p>\n<p>Writing impressive blog posts.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps even like this one?<\/p>\n<p>Counting the likes and shares.<\/p>\n<p>Mining passages for sermon ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Never\u00a0letting the Bible read you.<\/p>\n<p>Not submitting to the Surgeon\u2019s knife.<\/p>\n<p>Being concerned about the outside.<\/p>\n<p>But ignoring your own wicked, wayward heart.<\/p>\n<p>Faithless to the Faithful One.<\/p>\n<p>Flippant with the One who died for you.<\/p>\n<p>Neglecting the One who cares for you.<\/p>\n<p>Patting yourself on the back for things\u00a0His grace gave you.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulating yourself for achievements you didn\u2019t earn or deserve.<\/p>\n<p>Disaster strikes and you pray for once.<\/p>\n<p>But do you <em>really<\/em> turn back to Him?<\/p>\n<p>Success comes and with it relief.<\/p>\n<p>But do you <em>really<\/em> thank Him?<\/p>\n<p>Do you even believe in him any more?<\/p>\n<p>Do you <em>trust<\/em> him?<\/p>\n<p>Do you <em>love<\/em> him?<\/p>\n<p>Do you <em>know<\/em> him?<\/p>\n<p>Sinking into despair when finally you glimpse it.<\/p>\n<p>You have failed Him.<\/p>\n<p>You have lived for yourself.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly allowing the \u2018you\u2019 to become \u2018me\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018they\u2019 becomes \u2018I\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Finally standing alone before Him.<\/p>\n<p>Or kneeling, and feeling tears about to roll.<\/p>\n<p>I come for myself.<\/p>\n<p>I come with my sin and my shame.<\/p>\n<p>I come with my failure.<\/p>\n<p>I look to You.<\/p>\n<p>I empty myself of pride.<\/p>\n<p>Realise I have nothing to bring.<\/p>\n<p>I turn to You.<\/p>\n<p>I cry out to You.<\/p>\n<p>Not knowing what to say.<\/p>\n<p>My heart begins to stir.<\/p>\n<p>But then it wanders again.<\/p>\n<p>Alarm set early.<\/p>\n<p>But my bed remains inviting.<\/p>\n<figure will keep coming.<\/p>\n<p>I will keep seeking.<\/p>\n<p>I will keep knocking.<\/p>\n<p>I will ask you to shape me.<\/p>\n<p>Make me yours.<\/p>\n<p>Mold my heart.<\/p>\n<p>Bring this sheep back to the fold.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let me\u00a0hear \u2018I never knew you!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Then it strikes me.<\/p>\n<p>I may have changed but You haven\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>And You whisper to me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m still here and I love you!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve not given up on you.<\/p>\n<p>I will not let you go.<\/p>\n<p>You may not really know me, but I know you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And suddenly I realise.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about me.<\/p>\n<p>Its all about Him.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not me that can make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s knowing Him that will change me.<\/p>\n<p>Like a father and child.<\/p>\n<p>I come dependent and dirty.<\/p>\n<p>He meets my needs,\u00a0and cleans me up.<\/p>\n<p>Washes me.<\/p>\n<p>Purer than snow?<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Purer than snow.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I admit\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>I am not worthy.<\/p>\n<p>But I <em>am<\/em> loved.<\/p>\n<p>I am prayed for.<\/p>\n<p>And I <em>am My writing draws on my scientific training as a doctor and psychiatrist, my work in the UK's National Health Service and the pharmaceutical industry, alongside more than twenty-five years as a member of a growing church where I served on the leadership team offering pastoral care. My perspective has also been shaped by chronic illness since 2017, when I developed life-threatening pneumonia that caused lasting damage to my body, triggered several further conditions, and uncovered a diagnosis of blood cancer. This was successfully treated, although doctors expect it to return in the future. Out of these experiences I founded Blood Cancer Uncensored, an online patient-led support community.
