Some of these are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#000099\">WAS THE CROSS MERELY . . .<\/span><\/strong> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a tragic accident?\n<\/li><li>a martyr\u2019s death?\n<\/li><li>a satisfaction of the feudal \u201chonour\u201d of God?\n<\/li><li>a moral influence \u2014 where the purpose of the cross is to deal with our attitudes alone rather than God\u2019s ?\n<\/li><li>a \u201cdisplay\u201d of God\u2019s hatred for sin?\n<\/li><li>an example to us of self-sacrifice?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#000099\">WHY THESE THEORIES ARE WRONG<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lloyd-Jones points out the weakness of all of these theories: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u201c. . . many of those false theories would have us believe that the sole purpose of the death of our Lord upon the cross was to do something to us. But at the very beginning they are wrong. The object of the burnt offerings and sacrifices was \u2014 if I may put it reverently \u2014 to do something to God, not to influence man; they were designed to propitiate God.
