HOW TO LIVE FOR THE FUTURE\u2014Philippians 1:1-11<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Know Who You Are<\/b> (verses 1-2)\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>slave<\/strong> of the RISEN Jesus (NOT man) <em>and <\/em><strong>saints<\/strong>\u2014i.e. set apart and being cleansed.\n<\/li>\n<li>Conduits of grace and peace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Know Where You Are Going<\/b> (verse 6) BE SURE!\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li><b>Know Who You Are Going With<\/b> \u2014 Long-term, heart-felt partnership (verses 5, 7, 8)\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li><b>Know What You Are Meant To Do On The Way<\/b>\n<ol>\n<li>Verse 5\u2014\u201cIn the gospel,\u201d i.e. live in the good of it and live for its progress, don\u2019t just keep the chair warm! What do we do in its good \u2026\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 3\u2014Thankfulness that comes from remembrance.\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 4\u2014Prayer that is joyful and full of anticipation.\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 9\u2014Abounding, growing love.\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 9\u2014Desire to study. We will spend eternity with . . .\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 9-10\u2014Resultant wisdom\/discernment, i.e. the ability to lovingly apply to life the things we learn.\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>ALL of this results in verses 10-11\u2014Purity that honors God.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>II. RESULTS OF LIVING FOR THE FINAL DAY<\/b> (Philippians 1:12-17)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Verse 12-14\u2014Confidence that comes from knowing even tough times are for our good, e.g. prison making confident!\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 14\u2014Boldness to declare this wonderful news!\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 15-17\u2014Preoccupation with the advance of the gospel above all partisanship, etc.\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 17-20\u2014Rejoicing, eager expectation, hope, \u201cfull of courage\u201d, honor to Christ.\n<p><\/p><\/li>\n<li>Verse 21-30\u2014Glorious indifference to our own life and its sufferings. \u201cThrough many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God\u201d (Acts 14:22) Let\u2019s study to be prepared to die well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>CONCLUSION<\/b><br>Live a worthy life and fight for the gospel\u2014\u201cIt\u2019s all about Jesus!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>BACKGROUND QUOTES<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHence we have a service which is not a matter of choice for the one who renders it, which he has to perform whether he likes or not, because he is subject as a slave to an alien will, to the will of his owner . . .<\/p>\n<p>[The slave is one] who not only has no possibility of evading the tasks laid upon him, but who also has no right of personal choice, who must rather do what another will have done, and refrain from doing what another will not have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><em>Theological Dictionary of the New Testament<\/em>, Vols. 5-9, edited by Gerhard Friedrich.
