The most important Christian album ever. That\u2019s what some are calling Kanye West\u2019s Jesus is King which has erupted onto the internet this weekend.<\/p>\n

Our kids are growing up in a society where it really is NOT considered \u201cOK\u201d for them to be a Christian.\u00a0Celebrities talk about environmentalism, veganism, and all kinds of other things. But faith is off-topic. Christianity specifically is seen as toxic, filled with hate, and a medieval relic. And that was before evangelicals threw their support behind Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The public square is increasingly being curated and controlled with the explicit goal of eradicating public conversation about faith.\u00a0All this ironically is in the name of \u201ctolerance\u201d since some are offended by the mere mention of God. It sure doesn\u2019t feel very tolerant towards Christians. In fact it often feels to Christian young people that the whole world has turned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmcsoxford.org.uk\/research\/public-life\/media-christophobia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christophobic<\/a>. That may sound a strong word, but I think it reflects the reality.<\/p>\n<p>With the launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/0FgZKfoU2Br5sHOfvZKTI9?si=LMuGH7PvTramTB3w_zFmFQ\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Jesus is King,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0as well as Kanye West\u2019s announcement that he has converted to Christianity this year, suddenly the mainstream media are forced to talk about Jesus. Hundreds of millions of his fans are listening to this album portray a message very far removed from what they would have been used to hearing from the man who still describes himself as\u00a0<strong>\u201cthe greatest artist in human history\u201d <\/strong>and who still <strong>fully intends to become the president of the United States\u00a0<\/strong>(both of these bold statements are quotes from his recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/listen-to-kanye-west-new-interview-with-zane-lowe\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Zane Lowe interview<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Into this context the conversion of arguably the most famous celebrity performer has a huge impact. His public proclamation of the gospel in interviews and now music will make a big difference to the confidence our kids feel, and surely the gospel can never be proclaimed in any format without some people being saved as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Some are even suggesting that Kanye could be used by God as the next <a href=\"https:\/\/patheos.com\/blogs\/adrianwarnock\/2018\/02\/billy-graham-dies-99-influential-christian-20th-century\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Billy Graham<\/a>. I do believe that God is at work in this very public conversion. And I do think that Kanye is already being an evangelist to a generation who have never even heard of Billy Graham. Although for those of us old enough to remember perhaps Kanye is not so much the next Graham as the next Clif Richard who was certainly very well known as the bad boy of pop before his own conversion. But perhaps we should just anticipate that Kanye West is not meant to be the next anybody, but to be the person God has made and intended him to be.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/albums\/Kanye-west\/Jesus-is-king\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the lyrics of this new album<\/a> are completely focussed on the gospel and Jesus, as are his public statements.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cI am no longer an entertainer. I am not here for anyone\u2019s entertainment . . . My only mission and calling is to spread the gospel\u201d \u00a0\u2013 Kanye West<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But some Christians are cynical about Kanye West\u2019s public conversion and proclamation of the gospel via music. Some point to his previous behaviour and even a song title which proclaimed \u201cI am a god\u201d as a reason to doubt that such a man could ever become a Christian. Whenever someone high profile gets converted seem to not only doubt the reality of the conversion, but almost will the new convert to fail and lose their faith down the road. \u00a0That ought not to be so!<\/p>\n<p>The hostility from some Christians has not passed West by and <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Kanye-west-hands-on-lyrics\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">lyrics from the song \u201cHands On\u201d<\/a> reflect this reality:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSaid I\u2019m finna do a gospel album<\/em><br>\n<em> What have you been hearin\u2019 from the Christians?<\/em><br>\n<em> They\u2019ll be the first one to judge me<\/em><br>\n<em> Make it feel like nobody love me . . .<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Somebody pray for me\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This reluctance to accept a new convert reminds me of what happened in Acts when Saul the persecutor came back to Jerusalem claiming to now be a Christian. The Early Church had serious doubts and it took a Barnabas to accept him and (Acts 9:26-27). Shouldn\u2019t we welcome anyone who claims to be a new believer?<\/p>\n<p>One of the album songs declares Jesus as Lord openly in its very title. To make such. declaration and mean it is an indication that your heart is born again and your have been saved:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cIf you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.\u201d (Romans 10:9)<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t we pray for him and give him the time to learn and grow? He has submitted himself to a pastor, who speaks warmly of his faith in a recent podcast:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed-podcast\/episode\/01nBKm3dp7QEpXACqv89vE\" width=\"100%\" height=\"232\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3>\u201cI am not a theologian I am a recent convert\u201d \u2013 Kanye West<\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It might be tempting for some Christians to quote Scriptures about how talking humbly and dismiss West\u2019s showmanship.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDon\u2019t brag about tomorrow,\u00a0since you don\u2019t know what the day will bring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"line1\">Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth\u2014a stranger, not your own lips.\u201d (Proverbs 27:1-2)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We might also be tempted to quote <strong>1 Corinthians 1:26-29, NIV\u00a0<\/strong> to argue that God always uses unimpressive people to fulfil his purposes. After all, the argument goes, Billy Graham was a farm boy when he got saved.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span id=\"en-NIV-28390\" class=\"text 1Cor-1-26\"><sup class=\"versenum\">26\u00a0<\/sup>Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not <em><strong>many<\/strong><\/em> of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-28391\" class=\"text 1Cor-1-27\"><sup class=\"versenum\">27\u00a0<\/sup>But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-28392\" class=\"text 1Cor-1-28\"><sup class=\"versenum\">28\u00a0<\/sup>God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things\u2014and the things that are not\u2014to nullify the things that are,<\/span> <span id=\"en-NIV-28393\" class=\"text 1Cor-1-29\"><sup class=\"versenum\">29\u00a0<\/sup>so that no one may boast before him.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But, as someone once said the letter \u201c<em><strong>m<\/strong><\/em>\u201d is vital in that passage. It doesn\u2019t say God never saved or used anyone who was rich or successful. \u00a0And in any case, we might miss the point of what has happened to Kayne West over the last few years. \u00a0He went from being at the very top of his profession, as an idol to millions, to complete humiliation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/kanye-west-bipolar-david-letterman-netflix-interview-mental-health-a8934161.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Handcuffed, and taken to a psychiatric hospital<\/a> where he was treated for <a href=\"https:\/\/patheos.com\/blogs\/adrianwarnock\/2013\/05\/what-is-bipolar-disorder-and-how-is-it-treated\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">bipolar disorder<\/a>\u00a0and has been vilified in the press. One could almost argue he became one of the most hated people on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>In fact this whole recent experience sounds rather like God allowing him to be stripped of many things so that he was precisely weak enough for Jesus to change his life around. In the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/listen-to-kanye-west-new-interview-with-zane-lowe\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Zane Lowe interview<\/a> Kanye describes himself as something of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Daniel+4&version=NIV\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a Nebuchadnezzar figure<\/a>\u00a0the quote is in the youtube video here:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QuOCvKvrwI8?start=2246\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I think that we simply <em><strong>must<\/strong><\/em> rejoice that the gospel is currently going out to 100s of millions of people. We have no reason to doubt West\u2019s sincerity at the moment, but even if we did we should, like Paul,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIn every way . . .Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>(Phil 1:18)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kanye is absolutely clear that he now feels he is in service of Jesus Christ as he explains in the clip below:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QuOCvKvrwI8?start=1254\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF;
