I\u2019ve recently become obsessed with The Traitors<\/em>, a TV show about suspicion, deception, betrayal, the \u201cmurder\u201d of the faithful, and the unmasking of traitors. But beneath the entertainment lies something far deeper: a mirror to the human heart. Why do we love watching others lie? And what if the ultimate traitor isn\u2019t in the castle at all, but within us?<\/p>\n

In an age where national TV events are rare, this is extraordinary. \u00a0Ratings have eclipsed even shows like\u00a0<em>I\u2019m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Strictly Come Dancing<\/em>. Some viewers \u00a0overseas are so desperate to watch that they are ironically <strong>resorting to a minor act deception themselves<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stylecaster.com\/entertainment\/tv-movies\/1234858106\/how-to-watch-celebrity-traitors-uk-in-us\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">cloaking their IP address with a VPN<\/a>\u00a0to pretend they live in the UK. Fitting, perhaps, for a show built on lies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Traitors<\/em>\u00a0has truly become a remarkable global cultural phenomenon which all started with the Dutch program,\u00a0<em>De Verraders.<\/em> In the USA\u00a0<em>The Traitors<\/em>\u00a0is also taking off dramatically. The season 3 debut (January 2025) achieved almost <strong>500 million minutes <\/strong>watched on Peacock in the week of January 6-12, making it the most-watched unscripted series in the U.S. that week.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/TheTraitors\/comments\/1ims7dc\/comment\/mc5m489\/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">One reddit user<\/a>\u00a0says, \u201cyou should definitely watch as many versions as you can. I love this show! I\u2019ve watched all the American ones, Australia, New Zealand, UK, and I\u2019m now getting through Canada\u201d They are even thinking of watching the non-English versions with subtitles!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for me, I have only recently discovered this show.\u00a0 I was so fascinated by watching the Celebrity version that I have now also watched all three previous British seasons. \u00a0I am probably going to watch the USA one next. I am even considering joining the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetraitorslive.co.uk\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">condensed 2 hour version,\u00a0<em>Triators Live,<\/em>\u00a0in Covent Garden, London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What is all the fuss about?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accusations fly around and friends betray each other. Groupthink takes over, and almost unanimous votes sometimes occur on the flimsiest of \u201cevidence\u201d. Contestants are crushed to realize they were wrong yet again and have banished another faithful, and done the traitors work for them. \u00a0When they finally succeed in unmasking a traitor the joy is just as intense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What fascinates me is how quickly contestants \u2014 traitors and faithful alike \u2014 forget it\u2019s only a game. Although traitors are chosen almost randomly, players convince themselves that some are too nice to deceive while others \u201cjust can\u2019t be trusted.\u201d They make moral judgements of one another and fight passionately to persuade the group. The castle becomes a moral battlefield because, instinctively, the heart views all deception as evil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The emotional reactions of the contestants are extreme. It is reassuring to hear they have access to private meetings with a psychologist whilst filming. They react positively in terms of loving the experience and bonding with other contestants, particularly in the daily \u201ctasks\u201d where they aim to win money as a team for the winnings pot. Some say it has been the best thing they have done in their whole lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But come the evening and the round table banishment discussion friends turn on each other in seconds. When some players come under scrutiny they react very strongly to not being trusted by their fellow players.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiny shreds of \u201cevidence\u201d are jumped on and often group think takes over and a player who to the viewers at home is obviously a faithful (it helps that we know already!) is verbally attacked by a mob.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite presumably watching previous shows in preparation every new contestant seems to believe they will be easily able to identify deceit in others and so be able to spot a traitor. Multiple studies since the 1950s have shown that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/spycatcher\/201203\/the-truth-about-lie-detection\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">most people can only detect a lie about 50% of the time<\/a>, meaning they are no better at this than tossing a coin. Some become very upset when they discover how bad they are at spotting traitors. Often, I have found myself yelling at the screen \u201cIts just a game!\u201d Yet I can\u2019t stop watching.<\/p>\n<h3><em>The Celebrity Traitors<\/em> Trailer<br>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qEvRY6nwl6g?si=8Z9pd1_gh5jE6ug8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cI can\u2019t trust anyone here!\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some players arrive determined not to be a traitor believing themselves to be by nature a true faithful. Others practically beg the hosts in the opening private interviews to pick them as they long for the permission to \u201cbe naughty\u201d as one contestant put it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some traitors really struggle with the idea of lying to and \u201cmurdering\u201d their fellow contestants at first. But most, given time, find they love it possibly a little too much. Some say certain \u201cmurders\u201d leave a \u201csweet taste\u201d in their mouths! One even seemed concerned about just how much they enjoyed the power to send people home and said \u201cI\u2019m a psychopath!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It all has subtle hints of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0420293\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Stanford Prison Experiment<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0but\u00a0fortunately the game rules and forcing players into teamwork during the day prevents the hostility from getting truly awful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>I hope none of this has put you off as actually it all make for fascinating watching.<\/strong>\u00a0Normally I don\u2019t like reality TV or game shows but this has me hooked! No doubt it\u2019s partly the psychiatrist that is still in me! That and my fascination with the human heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s something fascinating about being able to each people\u2019s reactions and the varied ways that they deceive each other! As a viewer there\u2019s real joy in picking your favorites that you root for and those, traitor or faithful that you want to go home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As emotions flare on the screen, viewers at home often feel their own pulse quicken.\u00a0\u00a0We are captivated by deceit because it also reflects something deeper in ourselves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We love watching people lie because it feels safe.\u00a0\u00a0It lets us project the darkness outward while staying comfortable on the sofa.\u00a0\u00a0We think,\u00a0<em>I could spot that in a second.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0But deception fascinates us precisely because it is familiar.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What\u00a0<em>The Traitors<\/em>\u00a0Reveals about the Human Heart<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a thrill in trying to read other people\u2019s motives.\u00a0 The division the game makes between the faithful and traitors echoes our age-old tendency to \u201cother\u201d certain people. We imagine that humans are divided between nice and nasty,\u00a0 loyal and treacherous, victim and oppressor, abused and abuser, holy and sinner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often we like to point the finger at an individual or group of people that we think are worse than us. Such biases whether unconscious or conscious are the root of tribalism, racism, sexism, and even war.\u00a0 The Christian \u201cjust war\u201d theory assumes that we are of course only fighting from pure motives to vanquish the oppressors who have no valid justification for war.\u00a0 But the reality is rarely so black and white.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are \u201chardwired\u201d for suspicion and identifying those we think are deceiving us.\u00a0 Watching <em>The Traitors<\/em> unfold from the safety of our sofa insulates us from the trauma whilst we get to enjoy the drama.\u00a0 Because the viewers know who the traitors are we think \u201cI could spot that instantly!\u201d This risks us convincing ourselves even more that we are great at spotting lies in others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One reasons for our fascination with this program is that our hearts have a secret yearning towards deception. Like the players we really don\u2019t like being lied to and will often see that as the greatest form of betrayal. This is so clear in the reactions of some players to finding out someone they trusted as one of their \u201c100% faithfuls\u201d was a traitor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite how much we hate being lied to, secretly we enjoy telling lies ourselves. Especially if it is only a game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The Traitors<\/em> is just a game. But it is a game that echoes a deep-seated reality in the human heart. We all love to think we are good faithfuls. But the truth is deep within even the most outwardly nice person lies the dark and deceitful heart of a traitor.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The Human Heart as the Ultimate Traitor<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our fascination with\u00a0<em>The Traitors<\/em>\u00a0shows that we still crave moral clarity.\u00a0\u00a0We want to believe truth still matters.\u00a0\u00a0Yet the show also reminds us that our intuition, emotion, and group loyalties fail us.\u00a0\u00a0It is not simply that the world is full of liars; it is that the heart itself is a liar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The greatest plot twist of the Bible is that the greatest traitor in the room is every human heart, yours and mine included.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the last week a Bible verse that\u2019s very relevant to this topic has come to my attention twice.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?\u201d<\/strong> (Jeremiah 17:9, ESV).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First I saw a Tweet which challenges our modern obsession with being \u201ctrue to ourselves\u201d It said \u201cyears and years of telling people to \u201cfollow their hearts\u201d has produced a society that\u2019s \u201cdesperately sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Years and years of telling people to \u201cfollow their hearts\u201d has produced a society that\u2019s \u201cdesperately sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremiah 17:9<br>\n[9] The heart is deceitful above all things,<br>\nand desperately sick;<br>\nwho can understand it?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd \u2102\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd \ufffd\ufe0f (@sola_chad) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sola_chad\/status\/1982440501178490953?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">October 26, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/adrianwarnock\/2025\/10\/growing-in-grace-when-shoots-take-root-by-john-newton\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">John Newton\u00a0letter<\/a> I was updating, he skillfully dissected the meaning of this verse. He stated that the only route to true spiritual maturity is learning to recognize the full extent of the evil\u00a0that is in our own human hearts.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is not necessary to commit obvious outward sin to learn what lies hidden in our hearts\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/adrianwarnock\/2025\/10\/growing-in-grace-when-shoots-take-root-by-john-newton\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">John Newton<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus corrected his hearers concern about ritual contamination and shared his own diagnosis of the human heart:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person\u2019s heart, that evil thoughts come \u2014 sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, <strong>deceit<\/strong>, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person\u201d (Mark 7:20-23).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Jesus deceit is not an external contaminant but an internal sickness which every heart carries. The truth is we are all traitors. Traitors to each other but more than that to the God who made us. We fail to follow our makers instructions and as a result become more and more twisted.\u00a0We deceive others because we have first believed the lie that we are pure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was only ever one true faithful human \u2013 Jesus Christ and yet he was betrayed not only by his traitorous disciple Judas\u00a0but by the crowds who just one week before had been crying out \u201chosanna to the son of David\u201d and waving palm branches as He entered Jerusalem. Now they cried out for Jesus\u2019 blood. It wasn\u2019t for a game of pretend murder or even for a sanitized \u201chumane\u201d execution but for the most gruesome, prolonged and painful way of torturing someone to death known to man. It\u2019s no surprise the Romans were willing to do this to Jesus. But when the religious leaders of his own people turned traitor to Him it\u2019s no wonder he wept over Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus mission is to recruit traitors like you and me to become faithfuls. And he calls us to try and recruit others too. Meanwhile this treacherous world finds a ready echo in our treacherous hearts\u00a0\u00a0as it tries to recruit\u00a0us to be traitors or as one contestant put it \u201cjoin the dark side\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as we grow in Christ each of us still harbors an inner Traitor whispering self-serving rationalizations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our biggest problem is deception.\u00a0 I will examine the nature of our deceitful hearts in more detail in future posts. But for now I will end with how the Traitors demonstrates that lies affect us in four domains: our bodies, our minds, our relationships, and our spirits.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"traitors\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How Deception manifests itself in The Traitors \u2013 a\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/adrianwarnock\/2013\/04\/what-causes-mental-illness\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Biopsychosocial-spiritual<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0perspective<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Biological <\/strong>In <em>The Traitors<\/em>, the body often betrays the heart.\u00a0\u00a0Contestants are sometimes seen to physically sweat, tremble, and struggle to sleep.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t just the traitors this happens to, but sometimes a physical reaction or a fleeting emotion displayed on the face do betray them. Much of what we think is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/social-design\/201108\/reasoning-is-more-intuitive-we-think\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">reasoning is actually just intuition<\/a>, a \u201cgut feeling\u201d and it is very unreliable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Social<\/strong> In this show, as in life, groupthink reigns.\u00a0\u00a0One person makes an accusation and sparks a mob reaction.\u00a0\u00a0At the round table belonging matters more than truth and often almost the whole group votes against the same innocent faithful. In the 1950\u2019s a foundational social psychology experiment\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spring.org.uk\/2024\/12\/the-asch-conformity-experiment.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Asch<\/a>\u00a0demonstrated, \u00a075 percent of participants went along with an obviously false group view at least once. But in the daily tasks and going through this experience together creates deep emotional friendships among the contestants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Spiritual <\/strong>Each player assumes a form of divine omniscience:\u00a0<em>I can read hearts. I know who\u2019s guilty.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Yet only God sees truly what is inside our hearts.\u00a0 Even we do not understand our own hearts.\u00a0\u00a0The deepest deceit is self-deification \u2014 the illusion that we are our own judges.\u00a0\u00a0The gospel invites us to the opposite position: confession, not accusation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that sense,\u00a0<em>The Traitors<\/em>\u00a0is more than entertainment; it\u2019s a case study in the human condition.\u00a0\u00a0The game exposes, in four dimensions, what grace must heal in all of us. In\u00a0<em>The Traitors<\/em>, the story ends when deceivers are exposed.\u00a0\u00a0In the gospel, the story begins when we recognize that we are traitors.\u00a0Grace rewards honesty. <em>The Traitors<\/em> gold prize goes to the last one standing. The kingdom\u2019s reward goes only to those who kneel. We win by losing, admitting the traitor within and trusting the One who was betrayed and yet always remains faithful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King David prayed, <strong>\u201cCreate in me a clean heart, O God\u201d<\/strong> (Psalm 51:10).
