A Sense of the World

A Sense of the World August 4, 2009

sense of the worldBusily trying to finish this book. A Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History’s Greatest Traveler by Jason Roberts (HarperCollinsPublishers, 2006, ISBN-13: 978-0-00-716106-5). It’s the inspiring and really quite astonishing story of James Holman, a member of the British Navy in the early 19th century, who went blind in his early 20’s, for no apparent reason.

Despite his blindness, he manages a lifestyle that would leave most seeing people gasping for breath. I’m about three quarters of the way through, and he’s already been all over Europe (including scaling a live volcano), across Russia all the way to Siberia, and now back to England after a time mapping out the eastern shore of Africa and helping to try to establish a colony near Sierra Leone. I can’t even imagine what’s next, but I can’t wait.

I got the book through inter-library loan, and it’s due, but I’m not returning it until I’m done. Hang the fines! <grin> Back to the book!
