Newberg\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\"><\/p>\n<p>What can a naturalist celebrate in January?<\/p>\n<p>This post is part of <em>Naturalistic Traditions<\/em>, a column exploring <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naturalism_%28philosophy%29\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">naturalism<\/a> in Pagan ways.\u00a0 This column will cover seasonal celebrations, historical and contemporary movements, and ritual practices.<\/p>\n<h2>Natural Cycles<\/h2>\n<p>For places in the northern hemisphere with four seasons, winter has taken hold and the claws of cold grip the land.\u00a0 However, following last month\u2019s solstice, the sun is already returning and the days are getting longer.<\/p>\n<p>As for <a href=\"http:\/\/lunaf.com\/english\/moon-phases\/lunar-calendar-2012\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">lunar cycles<\/a>, the 11th will see a new moon, with a full moon on the 27th.<\/p>\n<h2>Civic and Scientific Traditions<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Universe_expansion2.png\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Universe Expansion, from Wikipedia. Public domain.\" width=\"135\" height=\"186\"><\/a>In the U.S., <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr._Day\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Martin Luther King, Jr. Day<\/a> is celebrated on the third Monday in January, which is the 21st this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King\u2019s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr._Day\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikipedia<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Some states observe MLK Day as a day of service, taking the opportunity for charitable and humanitarian action.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Chief_seattle.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Chief Seattle, from Wikipedia.
