My first piece of advice, hopefully not surprisingly, is to seek out Irish voices that are writing or talking about the subject; going to the source here is the best option. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20746\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51190420_1974887769292992_4303559184802119680_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51190420_1974887769292992_4303559184802119680_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20746\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Silgo, Ireland.  Photo by the author.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My second suggestion is to dig into the mythology \u2013 not re-tellings but translations of the originals \u2013 and the folklore. And my third suggestion, ever unpopular, is to try to pick up as much of the language as you can, whether that\u2019s just a handful of words or fluency. Language is a window to culture in my opinion and culture is vital here.<\/p>\n<p>That all said below I\u2019m going to list a variety of multi-media resources that I really like*. I\u2019ll offer a handful in each category and hopefully you\u2019ll find a few you like as well. I\u2019d love to hear of other people\u2019s go-to resources on this subject in the comments, with the understanding that we are looking here at<em> specifically<\/em> Irish resources (that is sources <strong>based in<\/strong> Ireland). You\u2019ll notice a few are mentioned in different categories, if they have a few different media they offer resources in.<\/p>\n<h3>Authors<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eddielenihan.weebly.com\/store.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Eddie Lenihan<\/a> \u2013 a renowned storyteller and also the author of several books, eddie Lenihan is a great resource for folklore<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lora-OBrien\/e\/B001K8NM4M?ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_sims_vu00_r1_c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Lora O\u2019Brien<\/a> \u2013 a selection of valuable books on Irish paganism, including material focused on a specific location (Rathcroghan) as well as material on practicing Irish paganism in general<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/D%25C3%25A1ith%25C3%25AD-%25C3%2593-h%25C3%2593g%25C3%25A1in\/e\/B001H6NUJY%3Fref=dbs_a_mng_rwt_scns_share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">D\u00e1ith\u00ed \u00d3 h\u00d3g\u00e1in<\/a> \u2013 a prolific author who produced a lot of great works on Irish myth and folklore; a bit date dnow but they still stand up as valuable reading<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51243211_349404809121639_2495062960284631040_n-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51243211_349404809121639_2495062960284631040_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"576\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20743\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Anthony-Murphy\/e\/B001JOY804?ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_sims_vu00_r1_c0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Anthony Murphy<\/a> \u2013 both fiction and non-fiction based on Irish mythology and sacred sites<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/John-Paul-Patton\/e\/B00MRJV90W\/ref=dp_byline_cont_book_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">John-Paul Patton<\/a> \u2013 a great resource for the Ogham and for understanding the poets place in Ireland more generally<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1?ie=UTF8&amp;text=Jacqueline+Borsje&amp;search-alias=books&amp;field-author=Jacqueline+Borsje&amp;sort=relevancerank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Jacqueline Borsje<\/a> \u2013 a scholar with a couple books as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/amsterdam.academia.edu\/JacquelineBorsje\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">good number of articles<\/a> published, Dr. Borsje is affiliated with the University of Ulster.<\/p>\n<p>Bonus author \u2013 I can\u2019t leave this without mentioning at least one fiction author, so:<br>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rflong.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Ruth Frances Long<\/a> \u2013 this author has several series, but I especially enjoyed the Dubh Linn series beginning with \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rflong.com\/a-crack-in-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">A Crack in Everything<\/a>\u2018, it is an interesting blend of urban fantasy and folklore.<\/p>\n<h3>Blogs<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/loraobrien.ie\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Lora O\u2019Brien<\/a> \u2013 a solid blog that features articles on a variety of topics relating to Irish paganism and practice<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mythicalireland.com\/ancient-sites\/dowth-dubad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Mythical Ireland<\/a> \u2013 a series of blog articles including photographs taken around Ireland and discussion of mythology and folklore of different sites.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harpandclub.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">an Sc\u00e9ala\u00ed Beag<\/a> \u2013 a modern story teller, this blog features new and re-envisioned tales of the Irish gods<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aliisaacstoryteller.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Ali Isaac<\/a> \u2013 a more experiential and personal look at Irish mythology and stories<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/irishfolklore.wordpress.com\/2018\/12\/02\/herbs-and-healing-in-the-irish-tradition-cures-for-tb-and-warts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Ireland\u2019s Folklore and Traditions<\/a> \u2013 excellent blog about traditional Irish beliefs, traditions, and folklore<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/paganliferites.org\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Pagan Life Rites<\/a> \u2013 a pagan clergy group in Ireland that has a blog which includes some great material and resources<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51102514_800986353598286_8491250889376399360_n-1.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51102514_800986353598286_8491250889376399360_n-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20752\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Youtube<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/MsButlerJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Dr. Jenny Butler<\/a> \u2013 a small collection of videos from a more academic perspective looking at folklore and paganism\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCooxocHYlB8G24xad1ZjAOw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Michael Fortune \u2013 a great resource for Irish folklore. Michael Fortune has a series of youtube interviews he\u2019s done with people around Ireland discussing folklore, beliefs, and practices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCMwf9Mkk6Kfs9RR6wwWCp1Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Lora O\u2019Brien<\/a> \u2013 a collection of videos on a wide array of topics relating to Irish Paganism<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLCD9E444577D9282D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Mythical Ireland<\/a> \u2013 a series of videos filmed around Ireland, focusing on different aspects of folklore and mythology<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20749\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51447867_241177320092755_5546900634436894720_n.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/124\/2019\/02\/51447867_241177320092755_5546900634436894720_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20749\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loch Guir, Ireland.  Photo by the author.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Podcasts<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/storyarchaeology.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Story Archaeology<\/a> \u2013 a wonderful resource on Irish mythology which not only offers translations but also discusses the layers of meaning with the stories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/folklore_podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Bl\u00fair\u00edn\u00ed B\u00e9aloidis<\/a> \u2013 a podcast about Irish folklore with some excellent discussions<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.headstuff.org\/motherfocloir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Motherfocl\u00f3ir<\/a> \u2013 Irish language focused but full of lots of great tidbits of folklore and belief<\/p>\n<h3>Miscellaneous<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CircleStoriesDavidHalpin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Circle Stories<\/a> \u2013 a facebook page that features articles discussing folklore and mythology<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eigse.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">\u00c9igse Spiorad Cheilteach<\/a> \u2013 a yearly event held in August; not an option for everyone but if you happen to be in Ireland in August, definitely a great resource<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/irishhistorypodcast.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Irish History Podcast<\/a> \u2013 great way to get to know Irish history<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.duchas.ie\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">D\u00fachas.ie<\/a> \u2013 a treasure trove of folklore recorded in the early 20th century<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacredsites.ie\/sacred-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Treasa Kerrigan<\/a> \u2013 for those who can\u2019t travel to Ireland Treasa Kerrigan offers a selection of guided meditations focusing on several Irish sacred sites.<\/p>\n<p>*in the interest of fairness and full disclosure I do know some of these people personally but I am not listing them here because I know them but because I believe they are valuable, quality resources.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m going to list a variety of multi-media Irish Pagan resources that I really like.
