<\/a>She kept her composure\u00a0as she sat across from me, stiff and formal, but her soul told another story, as did the spirit standing next to her.<\/p>\n\u201cI don\u2019t really believe in this\u2026,\u201d Marla said, waving her hands in the air in a hocus pocus fashion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s okay,\u201d I smiled. \u201cYou don\u2019t need to believe for it to exist. It makes it easier for me, and for them, but it isn\u2019t necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
If I had a dollar for everybody who said that to me in a day\u2026.well, it would be a lot.<\/p>\n
Her husband stood next to her in spirit, smirking. He was obviously irritated as he attempted his communication with me, but with her lack of openness and his frustration I knew this session wasn\u2019t going to come easy. He showed me that he\u2019d passed quickly, in an accident, on the way to a work conference. And he showed me a train.<\/p>\n
\u201cDid he collect trains?\u201d I asked only for Marla to shake her head no. \u201cDo you live by trains?\u201d She again shook her had. And then he showed me\u2026. \u201cMarla, he said he passed on a train. He passed from a train accident?\u201d It sounded like a question, but I knew that was what he was trying to tell me. It wasn\u2019t a usual passing so it caught me by surprise. Marla just stared at me, so I stated it again. \u201cHe said he passed away on a train. He shows me the train slamming into something and he was gone. Quickly. Just like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Marla still just stared at me so I continued and prayed that I was on the right track (no pun, honest).<\/p>\n
\u201cHe says that he wasn\u2019t sure when he\u2019d be back from the trip. It was an important presentation and he thought maybe a couple days, but it could\u2019ve been a week. You were mad at him for not knowing because your anniversary was that week and you didn\u2019t say goodbye to him. He said you said that you\u2019d see him when you see him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Marla\u2019s eyes grew wide as tears formed. She whispered, \u201cHe\u2019s really here?\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded and pointed over to where he was standing in spirit.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not mad. I\u2019m sad. I can\u2019t get through this, Kristy. I feel like it\u2019s my fault and there\u2019s a void. Such a deep void. I\u2019m simply walking around in a state of numbness waiting for my time. Is it my time soon?\u201d<\/p>\n
We are taught that death is final. It\u2019s the end. We grieve and we get over it eventually.<\/p>\n
Bull.<\/p>\n
Death is far from final. It\u2019s not the end, it\u2019s a new beginning \u2013 for everyone. And we don\u2019t ever get over it. We walk through it. And then we walk backwards and through it again. And sometimes we stop in the middle until someone pulls us through. Hopefully there\u2019s someone there to pull us through. There\u2019s no time frame. Just as you have a unique fingerprint, your grief fingerprint is unique too. The corporate world gives us three days to \u2018get over it\u2019 and mourn. Our heart and soul tells us it will be a lifetime, until we see our loved one again. The hurt is real. The heartache is crushing. And grieving is one of the hardest things you will ever do.<\/p>\n
Marla was still in the beginning stages of grief and although I could bring through the connection, I couldn\u2019t take the pain away. What I did do was open up her line of communication with her husband. She wanted more from me, but it wasn\u2019t up to me to give her all the answers. I did, though, help her with her signs and after a year plus Marla does now see his signs and they\u2019ve helped break\u00a0her frown so she sometimes smiles. She believes now. Not in any hocus pocus, not in me, but that death isn\u2019t final. Death is like stepping into a different dimension, and that there are visiting hours, it\u2019s just not what we think of as here.<\/p>\n
Not everyone will be convinced there is another side. Some will be skeptical and cynical.\u00a0And that is okay. Sometimes the grief is numbing and that is the way they deal. It isn\u2019t up to me or you to convince anyone otherwise. Sometimes they just need a kind word. A hug. Or a positive thought or prayer.<\/p>\n
We all will mourn and grieve at least once in our lifetime. We all do it differently. We all have taken moments for granted, thinking there would be a later, a tomorrow, a next week. If anything death has taught us it\u2019s to love, to speak the love because there are no guarantees.<\/p>\n
