When I became an Christian at the age of fifteen or so I joined an Evangelical church, a Pentecostal<\/a> church to be exactly, and inherited a tradition that the Lord\u2019s Supper\u2014Communion\u2014was a symbolic memorial of Christ\u2019s death on the cross.<\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t know then was that for the first 1,500 years of Christianity, for the overwhelming\u00a0bulk<\/em> of Christian history, the Church had unanimously believed that the bread and wine, at Communion, became the\u00a0real<\/em> flesh and\u00a0real<\/em> blood of Christ.<\/p>\n

And when I found that out, I had to ask some serious questions about why I wasn\u2019t in continuity with that ancient tradition.<\/p>\n
